Cluster’s biggest mistake was expecting Benteen to come quick with the packs. Benteen was resentful and jealous of Custer, and Reno was an incompetent drunk. It´s very likely that you´re correct when thinking Benteen was resentful and jealous of Custer, but Reno was an incompetent drunk is a very harsh and undeserved accusation (of course from my point of view).

We know exaclty where Benteen watered his horses...if you can decipher this...or just know where the South Fork of Sundance Crk came in... "Directly north of 2440 about 2 miles there is a high butte standing out all by itself. At station 3020 the line of buttes to south runs out at a point about 1000 ft south of station. Sundance Creek 500 ft. to N. Altitude 3305 Ft. Sta. 3124 is directly south of lone tepee. Sundance Creek 800 ft. to north. Line of hills 900 ft. to south. North of this station is the lookout point from which Gerard saw dust in valley LBH. The line of rocky hill with stub pines comes to an end here and runs directly east for a mile. Sta. 3124 is in about middle (N to S) of big flat. Bearing to deep notch 3 degrees N of E Altitude 3305 ft. Station 3700 is Benteen's slough where Benteen watered horses. Here the south fork of Sundance Creek comes in.Knowing what Camp's "station" is is a start, but knowing where he started marking them from? Ahhh...if only... BTW, Curley showed Camp the area of where the Lone Teepee was too (found charred remains, bones etc). So there ya go on THAT.

re your 'We know exactly where Benteen.....'
Well done! You have arrived at Hartung's Oasis.
What is truly amazing about finding the watering place, is all those authors who lapped up the wonderful WAG and his looney tunes march to the left.
Points at map, Custer was here. Benteen was here. Reno was........... up the creek down it.

Here's a bit of fun with numbers.
Where was Benteen when Custer reached Medicine Tail Ck. ?
It's good exercise of the mind.

Time to relax, so I delved into pladeuskruekenThis was rather interesting - books.google.co.uk/books?id=94nMqnaUtD8C&pg=PA148&lpg=PA148&dq=mechling+walter+Q.+tucker&source=bl&ots=6iHnGGMDVj&sig=Xl966zxtcnjtUtwbNh_n73Lvf40&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjy6aXktfPJAhUHuRQKHbF0AOwQ6AEIIDAA#v=onepage&q=mechling%20walter%20Q.%20tucker&f=falsewww.onlinebiographies.info/or/tucker-wq.htmC. T. Coggeshall (General Office of U.S. Indian Service, Washington, D.C.) succeeded Dr. W. Q. Tucker as superintendent in 1909. From Voices of the American West: The Settler and Soldier Interviews 1903-1919 of Eli S. Ricker, p. 148, with moderator's annotations in brackets:Dr. Walter Q. Tucker says that the creek which Godfrey calls Reno Creek is rightly named Medicine Tail and the one he marks as Benteen Cr [eek] they call up at the Crow Agency Reno's Creek. He says that H.M. Mechling who got a medal for going down for water, piloted Doctor Tucker, Col. Grover [the current Battlefield Superintendent at the time of this interview], Mr. Burgess, the missionary at the Agency to the field 2 years ago, and pointed out where Custer camped before he came onto the Little Big Horn, & where Custer made his disposition of troops [after crossing the divide]. Up about 7 miles from the mouth of Reno Creek Benteen broke off to the left; somewhat nearer down [closer to the mouth of Reno Creek] Custer broke off & went over by the neighborhood of Custer Butte [note: likely Weir Point], & he says that Custer and his scouts might have gone up on Custer's lookout. He said Custer was in the habit of pitching camp and then taking his scouts and riding around over the country and taking observations. Aaach so............... <7>

In theory, the ride made by Martin, and that of Kanipe before him, should and will jibe with the activities concluding Benteen's Indian hunt which is understood today, to have entirely skirted the immense Indian trail both up and down Reno Ck's south branch and the subsequent trail into Reno Ck. along to the camping grounds established on the rivers (LBH) right bank stretching along from Ford A for a couple of miles to Long Otter Ck. and railway halt at Benteen. The camp then moved downriver beyond Garryowen where it was attacked by 7th Cavalry. Anyway - It was before my time but i've been told, you never come back from Battlefield Road.
