I like Adam Beach as Crazy Horse or the guy who played in Dances with Wolves as Costner's friend. Francois-- I wouldn't know Adam Beach from Jones Beach, but Costner's "friend" was Rodney A. Grant & he would make a spectacular Crazy Horse. I am surprised no one has thought of a movie w/ him in that role. It would draw at least... what's the membership here?... 480 viewers. Best wishes, Fred.

I read Duvall was a direct descendant of Robert E. Lee whom he portrayed in one of the worst movies of all time...Gods and Generals. Almost bankrupted poor Ted Turner...wish it had. Gordie...yes they were all young. Old Varnum started his military career in 1868 and served until 1918. Some 50 years! Is that some kind of record? Hey Fred, what was he like? Scout-- You will pay dearly for these "off-color" wisecracks about my age. (Varnum was a good guy; I liked him a lot and he was a helluva poker player. Good story-teller, too.) I didn't see "Gods & Generals," but I liked "Gettysburg" a lot; even bought the DVD. I thought the book trilogy was awful. I read all three books like I was having my teeth pulled (I have this stubborn streak that dictates to me, when I start something, I finish it!). Best wishes, Fred.

Mr. Rat, if you saw "Windtalkers" with Nicolas Cage, then you'd know Adam Beach. He played the role of the main Navajo. I saw him also in the last night or two on Law and Order. Oh, and I think he also played Ira Hayes in "Flags of our Fathers." Ring a bell?

Fred, I did see Gods and Generals and wish I hadn't. Lousy flick. Gettysburg was very good. I watched it a couple times years ago before we visited the battlefield.

Frankl--
I saw "Wind Talkers" or at least most of it (some good battle scenes in that, I'll tell you). I still would like Grant for Crazy Horse, but you are right, Beach would make a good someone or other. I like Russell Means for Sitting Bull.
Best wishes, Freddie the Rat.

Whoops! I just re-read your post, Frank. I haven't seen either of those 2 new movies, "Flags..." or "Letters..." I guess they should be bought, huh?

Mike P:
Talia does scare me somewhat, but then again, so do most women, at least those who get close.
Burt works summers as a garden gnome in my brother's backyard, so we've developed a relationship over the years.

For Benteen (with suitable wig) how about that splendid guy Michael Chiklis, from "The Shield"?
The age thing is difficult. They were all young by our standards, but by those of 1876 they were mostly hitting middle age. Custer was going bald, remember; Keogh had already complained that he was going gray back in the late 1860s; all the veteran officers had led hard lives in the CW and since, and were pretty battered and weathered by now. It could be rather nice to have a contrast between the "Old Army" guys and the fresh-faced youngsters like Sturgis, Reily, even Gibson and Wallace and Edgerly ... So I think maybe we could look at a pool of slightly older actors for our main characters.
Craig as Keogh is a notion that appalled me at first; I'd always liked Brosnan for that. (Maybe about 5 years too old now, perhaps, alas? Or maybe not; I gather he does wonders in "Seraphim Falls".) But perhaps it could work ...
Depp must be in there at all costs, but heaven knows as whom. Martini is a fun thought. Or maybe Harrington, if his role is made big enough?

Sam Elliott might make a nice Charlie Reynolds. Or Herendeen.
This is off the wall, but how about Anthony LaPaglia for Reno?

Elisabeth--
I've always liked Depp for Harrington. As for Craig, he would have to have his hair dyed.
And what a great Herendeen or Gerard Elliott would make (I don't know about Reynolds, though; I always got the impression he was a little whiney). Talk about crust!
Best wishes, Fred.

Yes, I suppose Reynolds wimping about with his sore thumb would get a bit tedious after a while. And Herendeen would give Elliott some nice Strong Capable Frontiersman stuff to do in the Reno fight, instead of getting killed too early. You're right.
Craig would also need a humour transplant ... but he's a proper actor, so just might be OK. Not sure he's quite tall enough, though. Isn't he slightly under six feet? In a world in which Custer, at 5' 10", was considered unusually tall, it's important that the really tall guys -- such as Keogh and Cooke -- should stand out. (I think.)

Rodney Grant has already played Crazy Horse in Son of the Morning Star. From what I've heard from Alfuso, age has not been too kind to him ... though I loved him in both SOMS and Dances With Wolves.

RE . . Rodney Grant:
Leyton you are right. He did play CH in SOMS and was perfect for the part. He was also v.g. in DANCES WITH . . .
He did another role as an Apache in GERONOMO with Wes Studi.

Gordie,
Taking a meeting right now with the studio brass and some concept guys. Lot’s changed!
Sly had you figured wrong, feels very bad. Short version; you still want him, he’ll do the fence post thing – straight up, no stunt doubles. Only catch, he will not do the hole. We see that as a whole other role and it’s already covered, Segall will play the hole. He’s going to deliver a hole like no one has seen before.
The concept spin is wild, just wild. The Scientologists want to bankroll the entire enchilada. So Cruise is definitely in and we all agree the courtroom thing is powerful but the Caine Mutiny riff is too nautical. So you sitting down? This is it, think Cowboys And Indians looking for A Few Good Men. Wow! Demi’s busy, but Britney’s available and with the shaved head wants to transgender the court recorder role and she says the whole concept gives her a cute idea, so now it’s Slim Pickens and Pee-wee Herman in a pup tent at Busby and the working title is Brokeback Ravine. But the Scientologists nixed that and all the buzz is Iwo Jima, so we’re talking, you ready? They Died With Their Boots On Iwo Jima! But Eastwood’s already put the third of his series in the can. You know where it’s all dark and rainy and he kills every living thing on the island, Unforgiven Iwo Jima, and he says there’ll be at least three more after that. Then somebody remembered that Hitchcock thing where the Bates Motel in paradise is built over a Japanese pillbox, Psycho Jima. So it’s just too much Iwo Jima out there and some executive says that whole centuries old stuff’s no good, like Jarhead sank and Passion of The Christ made money but it was all Christmas holiday play, so maybe the cowboys and Indians are out. But we’re still going to spin off them except now it’s a bunch of wild teenagers talking on and on about a cowboys and Indians mystery, so we’re like The Breakfast Club meets The Da Vinci Code. And that’s almost it, except we love giving the teenagers funny names and putting a brunette in charge so maybe its Snow White, but Meg Ryan’s available and the execs want tech that kids will hook with so now its You’ve Got Mail at The Breakfast Club meets The Da Vinci Code. That’s more concept than will fly and the writers want to put in this dark character that’s like insanely brilliant or brilliantly insane, they’re not sure, so maybe he’s two guys using the same name or one guy with two names, but Meg’s pulled out so now the concept’s definitely One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and the moderator’s this nurse named Ratched.
However it plays, Sly’s rock steady on the fence post thing.
Yours,
Mike Powell
