I'm thinking big-budget, director yet to be named. High concept is cowboys and Indians meet at Caine Mutiny.
My pick for the male lead is hands down, Val Kilmer. Got the look. Got the quirky, near over-the-top ability. Big plus if the writers can place Custer referring to himself as "your huckleberry".
For Gall, think Sylvester Stallone. Realize this precludes any speaking lines, but remember the rage in Rambo.
Biggest problems are Crazy Horse and Benteen.
So many roles, so little time.
Please, suggestions only from among the living. This could come off the ground.
Yours,
Mike Powell

You know Mike, what a great idea. Because of a project I am working on, I have actually given that some thought, though for specific roles, I don't know. I actually thought Gary Cole was very good as Custer in SOTMS, but today? I don't know.
My movie would certainly have Kilmer-- excellent choice for one of the officers, though who, I don't know-- Johnny Depp, and the Indians would have to start w/ the "big three": Graham Green, Rodney A. Grant, and Wes Studi. Possibly Russell Means, as well.
Wow! This is really some food for thought! Great idea, Mike!
Best wishes, Fred.
PS-- God! who would you ever cast as Benteen? Where the hell is Elisabeth? Diane! FCW

Adam Beech as Crazy Horse. Dustin Hoffman as Burkman. Roger Moore as Cooke. DeNiro as Benteen. Stallone as the pommel on Reno's saddle. Robert Duvall as Ryan. Ryan Oneal as a rotting corpse. Jamie Farr as Corporal Noonan. Tom Berenger as Herendeen..................

Fred,
Wes Studi, the greatest face in film today. Forget the lack of resemblance, forget conventional assumptions - that man could play a heck of a Benteen.
Depp as an immigrant Italian trumpeter, any play there?
Hope the ladies show up soon.
Yours,
Mike Powell

Depp as Custer. Kilmer instead of DeNiro as Benteen. DeNiro as Reno. Studi as Lame White Man. Fred Astaire as Varnum [oops, sorry]. Myself as George Yates [you had to have been there]. The new James Bond guy as Keogh. Stallone as a fence post seen in the distance. Danny Glover as Dorman. James Woods as Girard. Costner as Sivertsen. George W. as Goldin [telling the story in his advanced years].......................

Harpskiddie,
Note my use of the formal address. I resent your efforts to belittle a fine actor. I hope some evening while out walking, from inside a dark alley, you hear "Yo, Gordie."
Darn near tears,

Hey Mike! Let's not forget Sam Elliott. I do like Berenger, though I'd be at a loss to cast any of these guys. Oh, I have one! We could use Tom Cruise as the south end of Martini's horse as they traveled north.
On a serious note (ahem!), I agree w/ you about Wes Studi. Rodney Grant for Crazy Horse. His pout would be phenominal!
Best wishes, Fred.

Fred, get out your powdered wig and you'd be a great Benteen!

Now we're getting somewhere. Suggest Gordie's people talk to O'Neal's people right away. Can special effects take his head down to one inch thickness?
Sam Elliot is perfect, but may ride too well to play any of these guys.
Cruise is barred from playing either end of anything. Also barred is Kiefer Sutherland. The action scenes come out all wrong if he's one of the cowboys.
Yours,
Mike Powell

Fred, get out your powdered wig and you'd be a great Benteen! Well, I am not sure I have the look, but I am certainly nasty enough.

The basic problem is that these guys were all reasonably young, some unreasonably so. It reminds me of the scene in The Wild Bunch where Ryan goes into the railroad car where the troops are, and he sees all these fresh-faced farmboys and forgets about asking them to help chase the 'bad guys.' Even the geezers like Benteen were shy of 45. It makes me sick to think of it, really.
If Stallone had the parts to invite ME down a dark alley, I'd make short work of him with my cane, which has a nice brass osprey on the end. If that didn't work, I'd resort to plan B [which is strictly illegal in Canada and most other civilized nations], but rhymes with Brauning Nein Mililiter.

I have always thought a younger Robert Duvall would make the best Custer ever. I didn't laugh at the suggestion of Brad Pitt. I did laugh at him as Achilles, but I thought he pulled it off fairly well. I like Adam Beach as Crazy Horse or the guy who played in Dances with Wolves as Costner's friend.

BGWAAONBHEW,
As for Plan B, never bring a mouse gun to a stallion fight.
Bet you'd have never made those cracks in front of Burt Young, or Talia Shire for that matter.

I read Duvall was a direct descendant of Robert E. Lee whom he portrayed in one of the worst movies of all time...Gods and Generals. Almost bankrupted poor Ted Turner...wish it had.
Gordie...yes they were all young. Old Varnum started his military career in 1868 and served until 1918. Some 50 years! Is that some kind of record? Hey Fred, what was he like?
