Ian.. ...I don't mind a Chili actually, but as someone from up north, you should know that fish and chips would be better... wouldn't it...? I've never seen a 'chippie' in the U.S.... it is, of course,... their great loss... ...all this talk of The Alamo... I shall have to get a book... I don't mind paying good money for something I really want but don't think I'm ready for Hansen's as yet... I shall read up a little first and see how I go.... ...thanks for posting those film locations.... I suppose I should confess to having a fetish for the O.K. Corral too.... weren't we all brought up on that? and John G. Bourke in ''On the Border With Crook'' got me fascinated with Tucson....Apache country.... ...I do the Euromillions Ian.... let us keep our fingers crossed.....of course I would have to set aside 20 million dollars for Little Bighorn battlefield refurbishments....and I want to buy that ranch on Davis Creek opposite Crow's Nest....those are my plans.... Mr Quincannon,
...regarding this earlier post....
I am no fan of Travis as a commander. I stand in awe of him as a leader.
...is there a difference?.... it seems the same to me.... please explain if you have the time... Margaret...

Margaret: First of all my daughter lives in SA and I visit twice a year, usually in spring and fall when you can use the swimming pool in her back yard (your garden).
There are plenty of chippies here in the States but not the kind you mean.
Romanticism and you have not even heard the Boleros yet, much less the blood stirring Corridos. The bakery is not bad either. I have to be chaperoned too. My daughter won't let me drive her car in SA traffic. She says I have lost my east coast killer instinct.
Start with Lord's "A Time To Stand" All of the essentials, then fill in the blanks with Donovan.
The OK Corral in Tombstone looks like your average between buildings parking lot. Don't waste your time and keep your dreams and imagining whole and unpolluted.
Travis as a commander: He failed in every duty of a commander. First he assumed that Santa Anna could not march from the Rio Grande/Bravo in winter. He did. He assumed he would not arrive until April. Santa Anna showed up on 23 February. He did not scout to the south and west as a means of providing early warning. Santa Anna came from the southwest. He did not take any local security measures until he stationed a lookout in San Fernando bell tower the morning of the 23rd. He was out drunk and wenching at a George Washington's birthday party the night before when he should have been tending to business and was hung over big time the following day. He was completely surprised in Bexar, and made it to the Alamo by the hair on his chinny chin chin. Worst of all he was in bed asleep in the early dawn hours of 6 March and Santa Anna got within fifty yards of the walls before he was detected. I could list about ten more things but I think you get the drift
Travis as a leader: Despite his tactical failing (he was a lawyer not a soldier) he held those men together in that broken down dump facing odds of at first five to one and after 3 March fifteen to one. when any of them who wished to could have walked out the gate and strolled away, any time they darn well pleased. That my dear one is leadership.
You must remember when reading all this most of the defenders were quartered in Bexar before the siege, Only a few were in the Alamo across the river. Not a man drew a dime in pay for their service. All were there because they wanted to be there. Thirty two men from the Gonzalez Ranging Company broke into the Alamo when they knew it was hopeless, knowing no further relief was on the way. None of them went there to die. They all wanted to live, and that is verified by the break out attempts (most say two different routes, some say three) after the Mexicans had assaulted the north wall and broken in over the west wall in two places, the northwest, and southwest corners (the two fortins you see in the picture Ian posted). They fought for forty-five minutes to an hour in that open ground behind the chapel in pitch darkness until, all or at least most were run down and killed. Any who might have escaped may have been overlooked. There is one report of one defender reaching the Gulf coast before he succumbed to sickness and wounds,. This report has not been solidly verified. The Texas plains is a harsh and unforgiving place, and there were no 7-11's on the corner where you could stop for a Slurpie.

I shall watch your pledge very closely Fred....it will be fun I think to see how you get on with this... I intend to try real hard, Margaret. Like quincannon, I feel I have never started one of these brow-ha-has, but have only re-acted. Be that as it may.... I will certainly do my best. You are correct about both Billy Markland and Diane. They are reasonable, smart, and kind people. Best wishes, Fred.

Hey, could you guys all do me a personal favor?
With all the hazerai we have gone through with these threads, "Independent Research," and all the rest, could we please make some sort of a concentrated effort to keep on the thread's proper subject?
I know there is great interest here in the Alamo, WWI, WWII, military equipment, modeling, etc., but these boards allow for all that, but within their proper place. Personally, I am not interested in the Alamo-- though I am certainly with some of the other subjects-- but it would be really nice to keep everything in a proper order.
Remember, "context" at the LBH. <g>
Diane will be spending a lot more time here come March, so maybe she could move things around a bit, but it would be nice to make it easier for her.
Best wishes, Fred.

Hi Fred, to be honest I don’t know where and what this thread is supposed to be about any more, it started off Helford laying down the definition of the word Squaw, then Eddy Waring cropped up, then Wild and Margaret started a debate, then we went back to Squaws and I was called a sexist, then Captain Jacks war was mentioned and Indian women in the US Army and then the Alamo, it then changed again to incorporate the US intervention in WW2, then Wild deleted his scathing post on the US, then the crap hit the fan and now we are back on the Alamo again. Phew I’m knackered after that lot, but yes you are correct that this thread need stabilising.
Ian.

This is so true Fred. It is supposed to be a discussion of one persons research, and specifically focused on that.
Tell you the truth though, on a morning where Justin Bieber was arrested for DUI in Miami, I cannot see how the Free World can focus on anything else.

There is now for your viewing delight a separate Alamo - San Jacinto - Tejas Revolution thread under miscellaneous. Perhaps Diane or someone that knows how could move all of the Alamo discussion there.

Ian. ..lol...this is what you get when a woman interferes....all over the place....it is at least, diverse... Ian, thank you for the links and searching those out... pity that one isn't available, it was a reasonable price too.... I'll save that book for another day.... I shall get the one Mr. Quincannon recommended to me...

Mr Quincannon,
..your daughter's home sounds very nice, complete with swimming pool.... no rattlers running around I hope... we are not used to that sort of thing in England....it's only people we have to watch out for....
..I sort of knew the OK Corral site was not much to speak of.... seems very popular nonetheless.... probably not really for me in any case... I'll stick with Frankie Lane...
I note you have started a new thread, which is a good idea... so I shall be replying on there in due course, answering the rest of your post on The Alamo.... I'm just going to read something about it, so I have some ammunition, so to speak...
see you there....

My oh my! First, Helford, your original contribution was worthwhile for Independent Research. I've always considered Independent Research to be for subjects that have a wider application than simply the Custer Cluster. As I believe I've mentioned, discussion of the topic is welcome.
To clean up this thread, I'm going to go back and delete all my other off-topic posts and hopefully others will do the same.
Best of wishes,
Billy
P.S. It was my suggestion to Diane back in the Ice Age that got the Independent Research section started and I have taken somewhat of a proprietorial interest in it which is why I lost it on page 4 or 5.

..I can see this is very important to you....
...I'm very grateful for Mrs Merkel's support and allowing me free rein here, but where you are concerned, I feel like someone who has spilled a can of paint onto an immaculate patio..
..therefore, and she doesn't need my permission, but if Mrs Merkel would like to delete the entire thread, that would be fine with me.... no need to leave my original post...it is quite unimportant.....
...very best wishes to one and all...
