My last name, translated into English, is Son of Ugly(MacLeod). This has tended to restrain our natural superiority.........
I've always thought it's one of the many reasons the Scots hit it off with the plains Indians in Canada, often in service to the Queen. They knew exactly what it was like to be treated like dirt, hammered, thrown off their land, and this rather recently. All of western Canada, nearly, is named for Scots. Half of Calgary seems like it's named for a MacLeod. And the sense of dark humor is utterly compatible with the sardonic Sioux.
But, to the point, whatever the truth of the name of Roman Nose, it's difficult to hear the explanations, perhaps offered seriously - perhaps not - and hymn sweetly to the use of translators OR the intent of Indians queried by them. Half of the time, I think they're of a piece with Bart Simpson calling Mo Sizlac's bar. These guys (the wasichus) believe anything if spoken with furrowed brow and offered in sincere tones. Their sense of humor. And it becomes fact because nobody dares question them.
