Without checking, I believe that this is Henry Roman Nose, not Roman Nose the warrior killed at Beecher Island.

Henry Roman Nose was quite a prominent man in late nineteenth century Cheyenne affairs. He was one of the Cheyenne prisoners sent to Fort Marion in April 1875 and later attended Carlisle. He worked as a blacksmith at the Darlington Agency before going into business on his own account. Roman Nose State Park, OK, is named after him.

Frank, unfortunately don't exisit photos of the great Wokini (Roman Nose). Only exist a interesting paint made by Henry H. Cross, that had meet him in his travel through the plains. I have that image. The photo of Wokini posted in your personal site is wrong: he is Little Chief.

As means of historical or physical documentation, we should better forget about the art of Henry H. Cross. Frankly, I do not know much about the man, nor do I care. I have always disliked his Indian portraits. Has he ever painted one subject in a real sitting? I would strongly doubt this. In my book these are mostly ugly pictures, mere phantasy products, perhaps vaguely based on photographs. Nothing but period genre pictures. His portrayal of Indian regalia is mainly ridiculous and far from being authentic. In reality those Indians didn't look like this and didn't wear stuff like this. There were many Western artists of superior quality, and luckily we know their names. Hans Karkheck

I am aware of several photographs of the Minnecoujou headman named Roman Nose, first from the Alexander Gardner series taken at Fort Laramie in 1868; and then several portraits taken at the Spotted Tail Agency in 1877 (a couple by James H. Hamilton and one by Private Charles Howard).
I am not aware of any portraits of the famed Cheyenne.
