If you went into Neiman Marcus and saw a dress Beth, your next question to yourself is it worth the price you would have to pay. Does it have the value you require, or is it just nice to say that you have a dress from Neiman Marcus, and it adds nothing of lasting material value to you. If so what is the value possessing it gives you, and how will it fit into the rest of the wardrobe you already have in your closet. Insightful comment on your part, for the decision to defend or not depends upon perceived value. I've been in Neiman Marcus a couple times. This is something I school my girls on all the time, to figure out the value of a clothing item, you take the number of times you probably will wear it vrs the cost of the item. An $1000 dress that you can wear for years because of style, quality and it's a foundation piece-is far better value than a $100 dress you will wear once or twice. However if it's a dress you plan to wear to one event and never again, the cheap dress is a better value. On the other hand the NM label adds absolutely nothing to the value.. You have to access the value yourself and not assume it's value from the label. Back to Reno and the value of defending the timber. It strikes me that the only ones who think the timber had any value are those who think by sacrificing men there, it would save Custer and his men. Who gets to decide that the men who were with Reno have less value than the men with Custer, or that Reno was less valuable than Custer? Custer gets to decide as commanding officer. Reno had his orders and he fell woefully short. He got a third of his men killed saving his own skin, and subsequently He got GAC and his command killed.

Only the illusory purveyors of make believe Beth, and those who inhabit the cult like Neverland of Army of Dakota reenactment, and the people that lick the bottom of their slop buckets.
Defending the timber is agenda driven drivel, by those who must find some excuse, because they can't come to grips with the idea that Custer fornicated with Dandy and loosed his bowels in his last second of life.
Will don't you dare show that film clip again. This is a family friendly gathering, although it is funny as, well you know how funny it is. Much better than Spike Jones' Cocktails for Two or Pass the Biscuits Marandy

Much better than Spike Jones' Cocktails for Two or Pass the Biscuits Marandy I am about to leave on a provisions run but I have been looking and I can't find exactly what Custer told Reno. I can't remember who(perhaps Jodak) compared Reno's action as a probe and I really like that idea. Let's poke here and see what happens. Reno poked a wasp nest and instead of the wasp's flying away feeling threatened, they swarmed out and attacked Reno. I can only believe that any commander in his right mind would not expect Reno to keep poking, especially considering that Reno only poked the first nest and there were a whole lot more in an equally foul mood. A commander worth his salt would have realized he needed different way to move those wasps, regrouped and came at the problem differently. Beth

Poking and prodding, probably produce profound products of many times undesirable produce, when the poker and the prodder are not provided with someone to save their precious posterior.
Would you walk into Lizzie Borden's bedroom with her daily ration of gruel when she had just finished sharpening her axe. Not me sister. No me.

What I find amazing is that people think that a large clump of brush, shrubs and trees will save them. if fact in some cases it will hinder them, as the more you move into this foliage your view becomes more restricted and that gives you zero LOS to what is going on around you.

Shush Ian. The Army of Dakota lurks and as long as they feel that way, perhaps they will be scalped (hopefully with a very dull knife)
How about a little Spike. It has been raining for a week and snow is expected tonight. I need a moral boost and it is either Spike or I will have to visit one of the Glens.

How come the link was loaded with Barry Sadler on You Tube?
By the way while I am thinking about it do you have any good reference material on UNPIK or can you recommend any?

I would consider it, if I wasn't related to her She wasn't exactly a serial killer, but had one heck of a problem with her father and step mother. Beth

Sorry to be the straight man for this routine ! Reading the above excellent posts (thanks Fred, Qc, montrose, Ian, jodak, Beth, AZ) it seems that the timber is a non event in terms of the outcome for Custer. No matter what happens there he has already played himself into a position where the end gane is inevitable. The only significance of the timber is on how many of the rest survive. Stay all together in the timber and the answer is probably 0, go to the high ground and there is a much better result. Cheers

Had Reno not retreated to Reno Hill where would Benteen have ended up? Had he gone to the bluffs he certainly could have reached GAC as the route would still have been open. Had he gone into the valley to support Reno, the NAs could not have left the valley to go attack GAC. Decision to abandon the timber was key to everything that followed across the entire field.
