Most of us know Custer's West Point history, at the bottom of his class, the most demerits in West Point history but with the onset of the Civil War all capable officers were needed regardless of their grades/conduct. He did prove to be brave and his CW record earned him the brevet of General. However fighting Southern Farm Boys is not the same as fighting seasoned Indian warriors. Their schooling was in the field and from the time they could walk and they didn't always do what the US military expected them to do which made for some bad results for a number of officers who didn't take into account that even though Indians didn't go to West Point they were capable of severe mauling of overconfident and bigoted officers who usually fell for the oldest trick in the book . . . the decoy.
Whether Custer learned anything in his time in the West (does anyone know how much actual time he spent on duty fighting Indians?) other than Indians will run if given the chance may have led to his demise at the LBH.

Any one want to hazzard a guess why Custer didn't send a message to Benteen once he gave the attack order to Reno? One would think Benteen would like to know that just in case he runs into hundreds of Indians fleeing from the attack. I'll bite.
Suppose it went like this:
Custer: Orderly, take this to Benteen. Orderly: How will I find him, sir? Custer: He's out there, find him. Find a dust cloud or something. Orderly: Mumble, grumble.
Question is, how would Custer know where Benteen was, aside from a general direction (no pun intended)?
Best, c.

Tom: The only difference between the tactics of a newly minted OCS Grad and that of a Corps commander is one of size and scope. Tactics IS tactics.
GAG as in gag me with a spoon is good. No good puke is better.

Can't remember when Martini was sent to Benteen. Wait . . . just remembered Martini said he saw a rider (Boston?) pass him. If so then Custer would not know that Benteen would be close by until Boston tells him. So it looks like Martini was ordered to find Benteen somewhere (follow the back trail, I believe it was) Martini ends up being the luckiest man in the 7th and Custer expects Benteen to show up and join the fun which may may altered any plan Custer had.

QM: I sense from your posts you are not a fan of GAC . . . which I have no problem with. I tend to be somewhere in the middle and swing left or right with what I learn from reading and members here.
By the way, I'm a little confused as to the Toms on the board here and who some of the posts are directed to. I'll admit it (my real name is Tom) but crzhrs fits me better.

Horse: There are really bad general officers That should not be a surprise as we discuss one really bad one here every day.. Stars on your shoulder do not necessarily equate to brains between your ears.
He was pissed off at me for relieving a West Point grad, with prejudice. He got over it, the general, not the grad.
The general, my brigade commander, went on to say I would ruin the poor boys career. To which I answered yes sir I was aware of that, for that was my intent. I already said I was unforgiving when an officer or anyone for that matter needlessly and recklessly places lives in danger. Such was the case. That general was himself relieved for cause some months later.

Whoa crzhrs!
Custer sent Benteen the note via Martini well after he sent Reno to chase Indians. I was imagining a note from Reno Creek immediately after Custer sent Reno out. Best, c.

You're damned right I would. There are only two relevant orders Tom. Come when I tell you and go where I send you. Followed by. Use your best judgment when and if you assume command.
Yes Horse that is true, as long as that rose is fertilized with good rich horseshit.

Laref:
I was referring to Custer's sending Martini to Benteen well after Custer had any idea where he was. If you saying Custer should have sent a note/messenger to Benteen after the Reno separation I agree. Still haven't found or gotten any good reason for Custer to either inform Benteen of impending contact and/or battle. One would think Benteen would like to know that just in case a wall of Indians heads his way.

I must tell you me and my wife have a small greenhouse business and horseshit is prime for the soil . . . can't say the same for poor commanding officers.

During my time in the military I ran across officers who I couldn't figure out how they became one and thank God they weren't combat officers. They were so bad they couldn't even order donuts right!
