Oh, brother!
Gordie, Horse, Larry-- Looks like we're outnumbered. Maybe we'll have to haunt another thread. Even that traitorous wretch, Calveras, has turned against us! And Scout's bugged because he knows Frank Finckel is my great-great-grandpa! "A new approach," indeed! He's probably got Custer riding Soviet tanks and compares Crazy Horse to Mannerheim. Where the hell is Darkcloud when you need him?
Best wishes, Ad Nauseum

Dark Cloud has manners, something you might consider acquiring.
I had a note from Jari this morning. He said he understands that it seems funny to you.
He's a bigger man than any of you except Scout who, coincidentally, is the only published author among you.

Anyway, several of us have published (even I) but most have not written a book. And by the way, you forget Broome & Snelson as authors who have published books. Even the Cuckoo-Nut is one published book ahead of The Rat...snicker.... Jari, congratulations. Don't worry about the comments from the bleachers as all are meant in good humor. And as for the Weasel's comment about Big Horn versus Bighorn; brother, that one has as many arguments for one as against the other. Be good, Billy

"The night was dark and dreary, and the moon was dripping with blood. And on the road lay murdered- a dead potato bug!" Well... ya got me beat! Do they have potato bugs in Finland or is it just lemmings?

Thanks, Billy. I didn't forget Jeff or Bob, but they aren't involved in the current ridicule nor would they be.
Fred and Larry, if you are trying to piss me off, you've done a great job. Congratulations.

Diane:
I beg not to be included with the usual suspects. You will note, if you review my postings with an open mind and a charitable heart, that I was being respectful of the author, and indeed chastized those who might equate Switzerland and Finland [the national temperament thing] or who thought that slagging a book that they will never be able to read [especially if they study Norwaegian] was humorous.
My question about the cover illustration was dead serious - I wondered where it was taken and who the re-enactors were.
I apologize profusely for any hurt feelings I might have engendered. Except in those who deserve them, and they know who they are, and should feel ashamed of themselves.
Gordie
PS While I have not [yet] published a Custer book, I AM a published literary critic, poet and lyricist, and have written several textbooks for security and life-safety personnel, and more than a few Corporate Annual Reports and advertising copy, as well as a staff and tenant monthly newsletter; and also wrote the odd letter home from school [some of the letters weren't odd].

Gordie, thanks, but I'm not upset with you. I never have been and doubt I ever will be.
I'm only mad at Fred and Larry because they obviously were keeping it up to show disrespect for me. Fred has some issues (witness his crazy rant against you a few months ago) but I'm really surprised at Larry.

My, my! How quickly we forget... or maybe we don't forget. And the low road seems to be the preferred route of travel. Sort of like some "A-B-C's" I once read. We roll in the dirt, forgetting the causes, the effects, and the subsequent peace. As for "manners" and "real men," I find it interesting that someone who know precious little of either, should bandy the call of both. Quos deus vult perdere, prius dementat. No Steve... it doesn't.

I had to google the Latin: "Those whom God wills to destroy he first deprives of their senses...." Good self-definition, Fred.
I saw the other thread where you asked Billy what the difference was between his making fun of the guys in the photo and what you did here. The difference is that you know nothing of the man you ridiculed and you went as far as even making fun of his name.
I haven't forgotten the man I met in St. Petersburg. I still adore him. Unfortunately, he disappeared some time ago. I'm not sure where he went or why, but he's gone and I am not the only one who wonders what happened to him.

Back to the topic . . . .
Jari is hesitant to join the boards because he doesn't think his English is good enough, but he provided this information:
A friend took the cover photo at Weir Point in 2001 at 125th anniversary. The name of the book "Kirjoitettuna tuuleen" means "Written in the Wind." Bob Reece will do an email interview about Jari, his book, and his interest in the battle and American history for the Friends website.
The book will be published on June 25, 2008.
Thanks to those who asked the questions.
Thank you, Larry.
BS, I'm sorry. I should have excepted you, too. You said some very nice things and some funny things, and I appreciate both.

Diane -
You never have need to apologize to me for anything. We're pals.
I am saddened that this thing spun off the road somewhere. However it may have happened. I would rather hope that there were no intentions to insult Jari directly. Sometimes, I guess, misunderstandings cause further misunderstandings that become expressed emotionally and usually regretfully so.
It would be interesting for Jari to drop by the board, and of value to all. I've spoken English all my life and am only marginally competent with it. (Please note my posts that say, 'Last edit:...') Jari shouldn't worry about. The smattering of other languages I know put me only at the level of the village fool, but in five countries.
He and 'us' have a mutual interest in this subject, and a way to communicate will be found. Heck, I may pick up just enough from it to become incompetent in yet another language.
I KNEW that majoring in Sanskrit was a mistake. That it wouldn't be of great benefit in later life. Can't even find a keyboard for it now.
Michael of the Five Jumbled Tongues P.S. I'd like to add that my comment about Jari completing his book was meant only as a nod of cedit to him, and not as a note of discredit to ANYONE who might still be working on one. Good things are worth waiting for.

To be perfectly serious (just for a change of pace), Jari might try a translator program to help with his English--though I don't know if it would be any better than what he could do on his own. Sometimes the translations come out rather weird!
