Hello one and all, and Happy New Year to everyone!
This is me being away for the Holidays and not having access to my books, but a couple of Glenfiddichs in, I`m not sure where to start looking. Never gotten my head all the way around this part of the battle (either...). Either way I`d like your help clearing something up for me.
When Benteen/Weir/Reno/? reached Weir Point, they saw warriors and the aftermath around the Southern part of Battle Ridge. The warriors came at them, and the cavalry retreated. How many of the combined Benteen-Reno companies reached Weir Point and were there at the time of the NA charge? It would say a fair deal about both numbers and morale of the warriors if they fet capable to charge several soldiers in the open. I know that the Benteen-Reno forces left Reno Hill piece by piece, so no idea how many ended up on Weir Point.
Once again, a great New Year to all of you here.
Geir

Hello Noggy and a happy new year to you too.
I am sure that four companies made it to Weir Peaks, Benteen's own battalion [H - K - D] and M company.
B company remained with the wounded, which would have also contained the bulk of A and G.

The main reason I asked was that I on my pc had a scanned copy of a map showing G on Weir Point, something I could not remember there and then. The whole Reno Hill - Weir Point- back to Reno Hill is not something I`ve read enough about tbh. I`ve check basically all my books now and found the map. It`s in Philbrick, which I guess can explain why it would not make sense BUT, I started digging now and Fred has written the following here about G Company and Wallace: "102. During the Weir advance, Wallace, with his seven men from Company G, was sent to a high position on the right [probably the Weir loaf]. [59] " "103. Once at Weir Peaks, Wallace saw Indians “all over the country but no firing was going on.” Moylan could not keep up with the wounded and the Indians started coming for them, so the command went back to Reno Hill. [37] " "106. Move back to Reno Hill was orderly. Company G moved at a walk. [60] " So it`s maybe fair to say G Company went too? All the best, Noggy

Hi Noggy, I wonder if the eight man detail from G Company would have been better joining another Companies as re-enforcement's, rather then acting independently. Eight men along stood no chance.
As far as I can see, the withdrawal off Weir was a shoddy affair with companies simply taking off. Godfrey had the sense to block the Indian advance before escaping.
BTW; It is nice to see Ole Gunnar Solskjær doing so well at Man Utd.

Godfrey deserves all kinds of praise for how he handled the withdrawal (?) from Weir Point imo. I`m trying to get a "max number" of troopers at Weir Point, those from g company have been the biggest distraction for me. Impressed you got the "æ" right, Yan! I`ve supported United since 88, and must admit that when he came to the club in 96 I was very "I don`t care if you`re my countryman, you`ll get nothing for free from me bla bla", but he turned out to be a true great. However, when he took over as interim manager I thought it was a bad joke. But he`s shown that just by making people enjoy the game again a lot will be fixed. Contrary to how it was under JM. It`s nice to once again see an attacking United side, and not dreading every game. All the best, Noggy

Thanks Noggy, I did quite a bit of research on the Norwegian army circa 1939, for my web site, so I had to interact with a few of your fellow country men, who I might add, were very helpful and polite. Here is my segment on the Norwegian Army, it is only small compared to some of the bigger nations, but I hope in time to expand it further; linkRegards Yan

Should you ever need assistance with translation or other things, don`t hesitate to contact me. I have spent my time in the Norwegian army and love military history, plus know a little Norwegian (...), so I might be able to help. All the best, Noggy

Thank you Noggy, as you can see the Norwegian artillery section still has work to be done.
I see Man Utd have been drawn away in the FA Cup to Arsenal, tough game.

I see Man Utd have been drawn away in the FA Cup to Arsenal, tough game. Yes, but Arsenal is a side we often do well against. Much more concerned about the upcoming PL match against Spurs away. Still, much more fun to see us play these days than the last year or so. All the best, Noggy

Yes we have two sons, one UTD and the other Liverpool, it gets rather tasty on derby days.
Things had been bad at UTD for quite a while, it must have got really bad because one UTD fan who I know said that UTD should have signed Jurgen Klopp instead of Jose Mourinho, which is something you don't hear often from UTD fans, especially since Klopp was already at Liverpool.

If I ever have children, I`ll make sure there are no conflicting interests when it comes to football Shame on your friend! There is no way I`d accept signing either a player or manager from Liverpool (or Man city). I still have a hard time with Michael Owen, but he got us a famous derby win against the noisy neighbors once which makes him persona grata. All the best, noggy

I bet you are delighted with that win Noggy, I watched it live whilst enjoying my Sunday dinner. I thought that we would see a shed full of goals, but both goalies played well.

It could have been 3-3 or one side could have lost with 3 goals. Amazing goalkeeping and poor finishes in both ends. Probably a great game for any neutral. All the best, Noggy

"PS", party people: Am I not too far off if I say Weir Point is around 2 miles (2,33 maybe to be correct) from Calhoun Hill? If WP is about 2 miles from Reno Hill, that sounds kind of right?
All the best, Noggy
