This photo appeared on the cover of the LBHA Newsletter last September, courtesy of Perry. This was taken in Rapid City last summer. Perry is the second from the right. If any of the rest of you would like to identify yourselves, feel free, but I don't want to do so for you. My husband just read me a paragraph from my Editor's Desk column from that issue: . . . You can access more on the LBHA News page of www.lbha.org, where there is a link to Scott Nelson's website which has his conference photos as well as those by Perry Baker. Perry wrote to me after the conference and summed up what a lot of us were feeling: "In all, this was a memorable conference and if you can convey the spirit of it in the newsletter I would bet you will greatly increase attendance at the next one. I'm in for life." We are glad to have you for life, Perry! In case you can't tell, I am not taking this well. I want Perry back!

Hi, Diane. I am Frank Bodden, aka bubbabod. I am the glassy-eyed fellow on the far left. This picture was taken in the bar of the hotel where the LBHA seminar was held, taken on our last night there. This was my second outing with Perry. Two years ago I drove from San Diego to Phoenix, spent the night at Perry's, and then drove us to Hardin, where we met up with three others and had a private tour with Rich Fox. Perry and I had a great three day drive up to Hardin, as I took him to places such as Durango and Pagosa Springs Co., and also Ft. Laramie, Ft. Fetterman, Ft. Phil Kearny and several sites of historical significance along the way. We had a terrific time, and I'm glad I could share those times with Perry. Perry had a huge heart, and I'll remember the good times we had together.

I didn't know Perry, but have found his posts here insightful and revealing of a wry sense of humor, and I'm sorry to hear of his passing. The grief and esteem expressed by his friends here tells those of us who hadn't met him that we would have enjoyed the privilege of having done so. Poignantly, I note that he last logged in here as recently as 4/3/06 at 21:32.
Ciao, GAC

Yes, it was a great trip to the LBH a few years ago with yourself, Bubbabod, El Crab, Gary Lemery and myself with Fox leading the way. I hope you find the peace you were looking for. Rest in peace!

I’m bummed and never met Perry face-to-face, although we tried. Last summer he left his business card with one of the Friends’ trail volunteers but I was never able to locate Perry.
Then, this past winter Perry sent me an email and joined the Friends of the Little Bighorn Battlefield. He was looking forward to June because he was going to volunteer for the Friends to help us interpret along the trails for the NPS. He was really looking forward to telling the story of the battle to the many visitors. I was happy to know I’d finally get to meet him.
Now, Perry knows what really happened at LBH. I’ll see you on Last Stand Hill, Perry.
And, thank you Diane for informing us of this sad news.

I only "knew" Perry from the forums. He seemed to be a very likable and knowledgeable person, funny, and always responded in an adult and intelligent manner.
My condolenses to his family . . .

It is very sad news, I never met Perry but from his close friends who have posted here, there is no doubt that he was passionate about the LBH and was full of life.
Somehow, we that enjoy history and the LBH seem to all be a part of a brotherhood.
Thanks for letting us know and I send my condolences to his family.

Of course it would take a Perry Baker to Pass Over on Passover and a memorial on Pariots' Day.

I got a "personal message" one day & it turned out to be from Perry. We turned to e-mailing one another & by the time it was over he had sent me disks of pictures & music, as well as any other number of long e-mails discussing the battle. When I was in high school & college, my favorite singing group was the Kingston Trio, & Bob Shane, one of the original 3, now lives in Phoenix. I asked Perry if he had ever heard of him (the typical, "Oh, you're from NYC... do you know...?") & he bounced me a note saying he knew John Stewart, who had been a member of the trio in the 1960's. The next thing I knew, I was receiving all sorts of information about various Stewart & K3 song-fests during the summer in Phoenix. Perry & I even tried to link-up during my trek through the country. I guess now that will have to wait a while.
Peace, Perry... and thanks. I'm a little better off for having known you, even if it was only in letters.
