I have to admit to not spending much time on this board due to other commitments and time constraints, so I didn't know about this thread until a friend emailed me this evening about it. I received the email from Michelle over Easter weekend last year while working and I honestly thought it was a cruel joke that Perry was playing on us all. Unfortunately, it was true.
I had known Perry through other "Custer Boards," for quite a few years and we had many great posts and emails, many are still on my lap top. It wasn't until 2005 that I was able to meet him in person. He was a very happy and jovial person that seemed to enjoy life very much.
I, too, am in the Rapid City picture, dead center between Greg Michno and the Rev. Mike Reeve, Perry and I met in Billings and spent the next nine days together exploring the LBH, attending the CBHMA Annual Meeting, meeting up with Frank Bodden in Sheridan and exploring Fort Phil Kearny and the Fetterman Battle ridges, then out to Rapid City for the LBHA Conference, before returning to the LBH for one last look around. We had a great trip, great discussions, and some great beer.
On the trip, we met the Treasuredude, John Mackintosh, and a wide range of others. That was also where I first met Diane in person, on LSH after the memorial, when I went to talk with Sandy Alexander.
To my recollection, Perry made three trips to the LBH. The private tour with Dr. Fox, ours in 2005, and another that was mostly a financial and painful fiasco. He did want to go back, that I do know, but at least he had two great trips to remember before moving on to his next quest.
