Cloudy memory, yeah, right, If memory serves we even had a former presidential candidate with a foggy memory as well. Report the new, tell the truth or get off the air. This is really disgraceful. I am very disappointed in him. Really.... Best wishes, Fred.

Agree, Fred. But then, the way NBC has moved away from journalism to just plain old agenda-driven propaganda, what can you expect?

Remember Cronkite and also "Goodnight David...Goodnight Chet?'
Weren't they trusted and responsible?
How'd we get here from that?

Back then we only had 3 major networks. No cable news or alternate news sources to check up on the stuff they were feeding us. Cronkite had a hell of a lot to do with the country turning against the Vietnam war, rightly or wrongly, with the way he presented the news. In reality, Walter Cronkite, David Brinkley, and Chet Huntley slanted the news in the direction their companies wanted, we as viewers had no real way to know that, hence they were trusted as being impartial journalists. With all the outlets available to us now, it's much harder to have a bias and have that go undetected.

With all the outlets available to us now, it's much harder to have a bias and have that go undetected. News is always slanted, that is why one should never get their news from only one source. I have to admit that I gave up on televised news ages ago and stick to newspapers and thanks to being online I can read many of them. I only use televised news for breaking stories and will then back up the coverage by googling local coverage of the story. My distrust goes back to when my hometown was hit by a major tornado, just before the evening news. I heard from relatives that one of the national evening news led off with a phone reporter begining "I am now standing in what used to be XXXX Iowa" It sent relatives in a panic. Beth

Thanks Colt, In essence what you said was they were trusted because bias went undetected. Good point. Best, c.

Ahhhhh the 50's Back when America was the greatest at anything. "Father Knows Best", "Gunsmoke", "Davey Crockett" and the two most important figuers Annette Funicello. Unfortunately we ran into the realities that sent us out of "kilter": Watergate Rock Hudson was gay Segregation/Integration discovery of the hidden sickness affecting this country that everyone knew of and about John Wayne really wasn't in the Army, Navy or Marines not even a cowboy for Pete's sake.
But in spite of these failures were are looked up to by many as a savior and leader of the free world despite the CIC's confusion as to his location of leadership(he reads maps as poorly as I did in ROTC) and his confusion as to who the enemy is. (DC will be able to untangle my grammatical wanderings. Repeated English 101 two times) Regards Dave

Dave, since you mentioned Wayne: From Wiki, attributed to a Playboy interview with John Wayne:
"I know all about that. In the late Twenties, when I was a sophomore at USC, I was a socialist myself—but not when I left. The average college kid idealistically wishes everybody could have ice cream and cake for every meal. But as he gets older and gives more thought to his and his fellow man's responsibilities, he finds that it can't work out that way—that some people just won't carry their load ... I believe in welfare—a welfare work program. I don't think a fella should be able to sit on his backside and receive welfare. I'd like to know why well-educated idiots keep apologizing for lazy and complaining people who think the world owes them a living. I'd like to know why they make excuses for cowards who spit in the faces of the police and then run behind the judicial sob sisters. I can't understand these people who carry placards to save the life of some criminal, yet have no thought for the innocent victim."

News has become entertainment, it's that simple.
I watch ABC because I like David Muir. I watch PBS because it's honest and on Friday I get to see David Brooks. And I watch CNN when there is some serious, breaking news.
Otherwise, I look at the BBC on my iPhone. I will also check out the Washington Post and the New York Times, both of which I used to subscribe to... but no more.
Best wishes, Fred.

CNN, like others, for breaking news. FOX News is my Comedy Central.

Chris Obviously you are a fellow traveler as they used to say malcontents such as you and and maybe Tom. I spent 27 plus years working with and for college students. So many came to school anticipating they would solve all of the world's problems not realizing how many would not make the first 9 weeks of school. We lost far too many young bright minds the 1st semester who could not manage their time, finances, morals and being on their own. So many young grads later came back, wrote letters and called to say they had learned so much about the "real world" that people would work so hard not to work so they could be on the government dole. The realities of life are so harsh on so many who can not recognize that people can be really bad and do lie. I am encouraged by seeing and hearing these folks grow up. Late but grow up eventually. Regards Dave

Ah yes the 1950s and the best TV comedy show ever to come out of the USA "Sergeant Bilko"
It getting close to the elections over here, all the main parties are making their pitch, so I am keeping my distance because they all remind me of door to door sales men, trying to get my vote, the main problem I find is that they don't keep to any of their promises they make, but that's politics for you.

Dave, many young people who toddle off to college each fall are not college material. That is not to say they have not got the brains to succeed. There a number of reasons. They feel entitled and have no investment of their own. Public schools have failed them in a number of ways. Many young people go off to school with no clear goals, if you don't know where you ultimately want to go how are you going to get there. Very few high school seniors are critical thinkers. I could go on putting up these short sentences, everyone on this board could add to the list. I won't.
I think I have said enough on this board to show to one degree or another that I am not a big fan of the current administration. I do however see good ideas come out of it, from time to time. I don't always feel the ideas are fully developed. The president now wants to give away a junior college education and have you and me pay for it. He already has a program like that and that program will pay for 4 years. It is called the GI bill. Not everybody wants to be a part of the military and I get that. Universal service is a concept that has been espoused by both parties. So here is the deal we have AmeriCorps/Vista and we have the Military, for every year you put in you get a year of college. You don't just go hang out for 2 or 4 years, you work. You can be fired and if you are, bye bye school. The other benefit for these young folks is they will know more about how the world works. They also may have formed clear goals. Enough babble, time for more coffee.
Regards, Tom
