The Valentine, Nebraska area is lovely. This time around, I visited the area early on a late July morning in 2008, enroute from home to Denver, CO. I ran across this sign just outside of town on Highway 20, which I figured would be of interest. To see up to five more photos - including lovely shots of the middle-of-nowhere sandhills and the Niobrara and Dismal rivers - go here: travel.webshots.com/album/570170475lFVWqq?vhost=travel

I worked at Valentine National Wildlife Refuge and branded longhorn calves and assisted in the buffalo auction at Ft, Niobrara.

I bought a couple of those Bison in the mid 70's, and spent many days fly fishing the Niobrara River when I lived on the Rosebud Res.

Poached as in a style of cooking, not poached as in stolen. Diane (Trying to save lilsandbay from the wrath of the Ranger. . . . )

Who rides the land, with a badge in hand, And brooks no nonsense from any man? Big Bad Steve. Yeah, Big Bad Steve, And The Ranger is his brand.
He rides over sands and patrols the streams, and puts to end the poachers' dreams. Big Bad Steve. Yeah, Big Bad Steve, And The Ranger is his brand.
Under blazing skies or through winter’s freeze, He tracks the outlaws down with ease. Big Bad Steve. Yeah, Big Bad Steve, And The Ranger is his brand.
Cross the law, and he’s at your door, Don’t make a run or you’ll end-up sore. Big Bad Steve. Yeah, Big Bad Steve, And The Ranger is his brand.
It’s not the Old West, but still you best Stay the path, or you’ll end up like the rest. Big Bad Steve. Yeah, Big Bad Steve, And The Ranger is his brand.
Through tobacco juice he drinks a beer That’s one bad hombre you better fear. Big Bad Steve. Yeah, Big Bad Steve, And The Ranger is his brand.
He’ll hunt you down whatever it takes, In them thar hills, or on the lakes. Big Bad Steve. Yeah, Big Bad Steve, And The Ranger is his brand.
So, run and hide if you think you can But I warn you now he’ll get his man. Big Bad Steve. Yeah, Big Bad Steve, And The Ranger is his brand.

I'm thinkin' the newbie is referring to what he did to the FISH. *big grin*
AZ Ranger you just go put that badge away. LOL! Hey, so am not sure when you were there, Steve, but did you meet Supt. Paul Hedren? In the early 2000s he was superintendent of the Niobrara National Scenic River... and he's an Indian Wars researcher and writer, of course. I got to hear him speak at the Warbonnet field in NW Nebraska in 2004, and he led our PIT group around to the sites involved. I finally purchased his book on that incident last summer at Fort Laramie.
What do you have as good memories of around Valentine? Also of interest to me, that I'd like to go to just once, is the annual "star party" at the Merritt Reservoir. Last weekend of July, I believe. Looking at stars in those dark skies, armed with telescopes, would be great!
Also, have you been to Smith Falls State Park on the Niobrara? Very pretty! I was there after a big storm. I saw one of the first big wind towers in that area - and lightning struck it as a storm moved through. There were beautiful mammatus clouds at Smith Falls... Lost all those photos in broken water pipe incident (the slides in an album) and then the scans in a hard drive crash. aaack!

Hey, lilsandbay, I just googled "Little Sand Bay, Wisconsin"... I think I was in your vicinity last summer. Was my first time in the area, if my hunch on location is correct. Backpacked overnight on Meyer's Beach trail. Those sea caves at sunset were marvelous!! It'd be great to walk by them on the ice this time of year... long as the ice holds!! I suppose kayaking by them is cool, too, but I'm not much of an in-the-water person. Then it was back to Bayfield to take the big boat to Stockton Island in the Apostles. Camped there two nights over the Fourth of July. Loved it! Didn't see any bears, though. Julian Bay was really pretty - as was the whole area. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks BS I will save that.
Lizs I was there in 1978. What I remember is a simple life and hard work. We used counter checks at the grocery store. Fished and hunted when it was in season. (No poaching)
I mowed, hayed the sand trails, counted ducks, drained a lake, put up windmills, built fence, nest dragging, hunted pheasant and grouse, and fish the lakes.
