Dear Diane! I know only that he was a very handsome guy. His hair was so long for I'm jealous for him! ;D But now seriously, there's few information about him: He was an Oglala soldier at the Old Red Cloud Agency in 1871. Surely he wasn't present at the Little Bighorn. He was rather an Agency Indian. In 1880 he traveled with the delegation of Red Cloud to Washington D.C. Seven years later he joined to the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and toured in Europe also. He still lived in 1909. This is the all what I know about this Oglala... so few information... I hope other people know more infos. I'm also curious for him. Your sincerely: Agnes

Wasn't there a Cheyenne by that name?
Also in one of John Ford's movie trilogy of the US Cavalry there was a Cheyenne named Red Shirt who led the warriors.

Also in the movie Cheyenne Autumn, Sal Mineo played a warrior by the name of Red Shirt.
This guy gets around!

I guess he was one of the major Waghlue(?) band-leaders in the 70s and 80s, but I don't know more than Agnes. There's a nice Godkin-photo of him that several of us received recently. For good measure here's a studio portrait of him from a Washington-delegation. There's also a Red Shirt on the Crazy Horse surrender ledger. No info on him.

Red Shirt was one of the leading Indians with Cody's Wild West Show, but he left them in Barcelona in 1889 following a quarrel with Rocky Bear in France. Rocky Bear then took over as the leading Indian. One reason suggested for the quarrel was jealousy. Apparently, Red Shirt had more luck with the French women than Rocky Bear. Must have been that hair - although I think I recall seeing seen a photo where it's cropped! Nice photo of him visiting Carlisle:

Hi Crzhrs!
If I remember well Sal Mineo played Red Shirt, the son of Dull Knife. Probably a fictional charachter? The eldest son of Dull Knife was Bull Hump. Otherwise the film was not bad.
Sincerely: Agnes

Grahame, You thought for this picture? Red Shirt stands in the center with pipe. His hair looks shorter. According to the description this photo was made around 1887.

Good photo, Agnes. I clicked on it to see an enlargement. It looks like he's wearing a Peace Medal.

Hello Diane! You don't want Red Shirt as Your husband? Here's another photo about Red Shirt with a better view of his peace medal from 1904.

He looked better at a distance. Thanks, Agnes, but I have a live husband!

Does anyone know-- for sure!-- if he was or was not at the Little Big Horn battle?
(I would kill for that guy's hair! And Diane! Not even a smirk, understand?)
Best wishes, Fred.

The Waghlue (I'm pretty sure that spelling is dead wrong) band of the Oglalas was the "progressive" branch, located at or around Red Cloud Agency. Loafers were the term used by others on them. Red Shirt was as long away from the LBH as he could be.
Not sure but I think it is Cheyenne Autumn where Ford cast Navaho tribespeople as the Cheyenne and when you hear them talking it's actually Navaho they're talking. And the stuff they say have nothing to do with the plot of the movie.
