As far as Reno crossing the river. I believe the far bank slowed the speed down allowing the Indians access to to the troopers waiting to get up the bank. Under extreme stress and this certainly was that tunnel vision kicks in as far as the troopers. Their focus was to get up that bank as fast as they could. Military discipline should have provided some type of cover fire if at all possible.
