I see the name of this battle/river spelled both ways. Old maps read "Big Horn River" but these days it is mostly spelled as one word.
Your thoughts, please.
Thanks, Jenny
CORRECTION to above^^ I meant to type Old maps read "Little Big Horn River...."

From that link: "The development of the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, by the Department of Interior – National Park Service, initiated this declaration. On December 13, 1962, the United States Board of Geographic Names, officially named the mountains, the Bighorn Mountains. The Case Brief is #686, Docket List #45. It was submitted on Aug. 6, 1962, prepared and approved, on Dec. 14, 1962, by the Secretary of Interior. It specifically states not to use Big Horn Mountains, Big Horn Range or Big Horn Range." As this was approved and finalized on my birthday I'm going with it. j

Haha Noggy, your answers always include the phrase "...who knows?" But thanks for the link! j Well, I'm a Historian by education, and if I don't know something to be a fact I tend to point that out rather than present my thoughts as facts. Especially when it comes to the LBH, there are so many uncertainties, "maybes", "what ifs" etc that I'm not going to pretend to be 100% sure about stuff I'm not. I leave that to others (As you may know, there is no shortage of people who claim to now Custer's movement within an inch, who killed who, the color of Weir's panties or Sitting Bull's record in Wordfeud. I'm not one of those people) All the best, Noggy

Little Horn is what Gordon Harper called it. Steve - I can appreciate that, but it's like the War Department. Nobody calls it that anymore, even if that's what it is. J

I was a newspaper reporter and then a public affairs official for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for about 8 years. I do, however, know the color of Reno's panties. J

Well,at least it`s not as confusing as another "horn".The English Horn,of the symphony orchestra,is neither English nor a horn!!?

Steve - I can appreciate that, but it's like the War Department. Nobody calls it that anymore, even if that's what it is. J Actually....All of the locals and those that live in that area still call it the Little Horn. Only tourists that don't know any better call it the Little Big Horn. There is the Little Horn State bank Little Horn ranch out of Wyola Those that don't care might call it the Little Big Horn. They might even get everyone else to call it the Little Big Horn. That does not make them right. Only inconsiderate of the true history. True "Historians" should know the difference. Rosebud Many also mistakenly call the Rosebud a river when it is only a creek. Rosebud, thanks for the info. This is very interesting. I have never seen a discussion about the name Little Horn v Little Bighorn. People can't know about this sort of thing unless they are informed. It is further complicated by the name of the monument, as you are probably aware, so I don't think being inconsiderate of history has anything to do with it. I am a "historian," (if that's difference from a historian,) and I don't claim to know everything, or perhaps anything, but I do care very much about this topic in general, which is why I'm glad to be part of this board. SO...thanks for the enlightenment, because I had no idea, and I bet a lot of others would say the same if they get far enough into this thread! Jenny

No just particular about people being rude. Have a great day! J So do you always thank people for being rude? You did actually thank me...I find that hilarious. You have a nice day R It did come off that way, however I DO thank you for answering my question. You had information I didn't expect. People on this forum have a thing about being territorial or right instead of just discuss things. I wanted to know why the discrepancy and you answered, so thanks, even if it did come off as pretty rude/accusatory. Maybe that's just how things sound online, but it's just as easy to write in a way that sounds friendly and informative. J
