Ian, The left is obviously from your link. The right is a crop of an old image when I was trying to recreate the battlefield as is might have been in 1876 - taking out the visitor center etc. At the time I wasn't too concerned with the river changing course but the road, alteration of Weir Point and the road loop at Calhoun hill bugged me back then. Nuff said. The same colored stars correspond to points why I think it's Deep Ravine.

Come to think of it. If we're to discuss areas etc. - how does one define say the start and end of Calhoun Coulee, Deep Ravine, Sharpshooter Ridge? These areas don't lend themselves to specificity, like the fords. Rhetorical..... Best, c.

AZ brought up an interesting point this morning, stating that he thought that Ford D was down at the end of the access road that services NPS housing. I answred that that was probably one of the number of fords known collectively as Ford D. I stand by that, but what interests me is which one was Custer supposed to have looked at, if indeed he did go to Ford D, and not just have viewed it from a distance. Now I believe either Fox or Scott did some work by the bridge, and I have no reason to doubt that as a location of one of the several fords, but looking at the one that AZ points to makes a lot of sense to me in that if he did go to the ford itself those around the arc of the river closer to the modern bridge would mean exposing himself on a flat area, where that is not necessarily so if he went to the one at the end of the service road.
I welcome thoughts on this, as my argument against going all the way to the bridge area has always been based on needless exposure.

Chuck, this is scanned from the Bonafide map, though it is a little vague. Ian.

A little vague perhaps, but the blue line represents the river course in 1876, and while I would prefer to see something a little more north in this scan it does represent the point I an trying to get across, that going to the bridge area would put Custer on open ground, which would be, I think, detremental to any design he might have.

Chuck, the scanner is having problems picking out details on the map, but this may be the area you are after; Ian.

I am going to the battlefield again in June and add the D fords to my list. Seems I remember a discussion years ago where Gordie was addressing the D fords. That there is a ford near the highway is not relevant if they never went there in my opinion.
There are numerous fords between Ford A and the highway crossing of the LBH.
Still haven't heard if that Ford B on the map is MTF at the confluence of MTC and the LBH. It appears to me to be closer to the Real Birds crossing area used in reenactments.
Regards
AZ Ranger

Look forward to reading your results Steve. Ian. Me too! Think I should re-letter the map with "Possible Ford Locations" and use multiple arrows! Best, c.
