If the "fords" also include Indian fords then Thompson's ford was used by the Indians and was between A and B. I believe Indians cross like cowboys and really only look at the banks on both sides.

Duane: Just keep in mind those places labeled fords do not indicate just one crossing place, but rather an area that have multiple places to cross, suitable access and egress for larger numbers of crossers, and a relatively stable river bottom. More than anything though it must lead to a place you want to go.
I included retreat ford, and it was not on my personal top ten places to cross that river. Its only value lies in the fact it was there

My pleasure. Alfakilo has the best topo images and descriptions (don't mean to slight others) as I recall. Best, c.

Ithought the fords D are at the end of the road starting at the NPS housing.

Hey Chris how did you add the markings to that map I posted? At first it was too large to add on the image tab, so I placed a link instead, word. Power point and paint all let me down when I tried to add markers so did you go on line to a site like photobucket?
Great job by the way.
Is deep ravine in between D and C? Look at the draw that leads from the river up to the museum and the foot path that runs parallel to it, that to me looks like deep ravine, the point at were C leads to is Calhoun coulee.

Steve: I believe Ford D is not one but a series of fords that follow that river arc on the map from the end of the access road around to the bridge crossing. Ford D then is not one place but rather an area.
Ian: Where Chris has placed the arrow is on one of the Ford C's. The one in question leads both into Deep Ravine and Calhoun Coulee. At that fork you see the left most branch id DR, the one on the right is CC. Just where the N is in National, is another that leads directly into Cemetery Ravine, and there is also another, that orients on Cemetery Ridge. I think it is this last where Gibbon crossed but that is only speculation on my part, It very well could be the one leading into Cemetery Ravine/
Look for fords at places where erosion touches near the river, or in the case of most of Ford D flat ground on both sides of the river.

Ian, I opened the link you posted, then right mouse clicked to get it on the clipboard. Next I pasted it into an old Corel PhotoPaint program and cropped the image and added the lettering. Then uploaded to Photobucket.
AZ, I was under the impression the D ford area was near the bridge crossings. Maybe Fred will take a look.
Ian, I think the Y of Deep Ravine is just under the O in National. The point north is where Cemetery Ravine hits the river. maybe! Now I'm totally confused ....rats.
Best, c.

Chris I am sure that DR is here and that CC is there, I think? Ian.

Ian: Your arrow marked Calhoun Coulee is correct. Do you see the point where that arrow bends? That fork is where Deep Ravine starts and as you go further up toward the ridge it too forms a Y touching just below the ridge spine in two places. The other arrow leads from (southernmost) of the Ford D's. The depression in the middle of those two arrows is Cemetery Ravine.
Get out your Bonafides and compare the two.

Hi Chuck I hope your better half is recovering well, please wish her a good day from me when you next visit her.
Thanks for the info, as I didn’t know that the two ravines (DR & CC) were that close.
Ian.

They start out close and branch off.
I think they are moving her to a week long stay in rehab today or at the latest tomorrow.

Ian, I'm going to try and post comparison images as close to scale as I can. Let's see where that leads us! Might take some time though, please bear with me, I'm olde and slowe but subscribe to the pic worth a thousand adage.
It would really be annoying to find out areas we refer to are not equally understood....reminds me of DC and his glossary posts, which I agree with.
Best, c.
