Excellent post, Melani! I have been told that the request to disinter was denied by the county coroner so the remains, if any, will stay where they are. However . . . DOD JFAC (Joint Force Accounting Command), the command responsible for the MIA/POW program, took the report although the priority on this “unknown” is not high on the list as the remains, if any, are in the US. But, they know of them and with the correct political push they can be recovered if ever threatened again – as long as we know of the threat.

Topkick....I don't know why, but the crazier the story the more I love it. Ask Diane. This has got to be among the top of looney bird theories concerning the LBH. I still find it amazing as to what people will believe some time. The cover to the McVey book says that this is "the Crow truth" which is odd since none survived to tell the tale.
Poor Bouyer, even the Crow scoust wanted to dis him. I think there is another story where Bouyer leads Custer into a trap by an arrangement with Sitting Bull.

I think maybe "the Crow truth" is often a trifle different from other people's.

Glad to hear that JFAC is aware of this issue.

Here are two more views courtesy of Abby Grace. They give a good perspective of the placement of the memorial.

Just received my copy of Richard Upton's 10th and 50th Anniversary etc. book, and started from the back with the Appendices, which fpllow a really neat section on the Unknown's Memorial, including a list of what was put into the tomb.
Apparently the current site is not original, the remains having to be moved in 1957 to facilitate alterations to Hwy 87. It was moved nearer to the then Garryowen Store [there are photos in the book] from a more distant, but nearby, location.
The list of contents, in addition to White Bull's tomahawk [which incidentally was not found in the crypt in 1957 - nor were the cavalry buttons]:
copy of Boots and Saddles; letter from Mrs. Custer to the Executive Committee Custer Memorial Association pertaining to the program; copy of A Trooper With Custer; Billings Gazette 19 June 1926; Fireworks program [there was a thousand dollar fireworks display during the celebrations; Garry Owen Trumpeter [paper of the 7th Cavalry]; Insignia-jewel 7th U.S. Cavalry with inscription "Garry Owen;" steel plate Custer Battlefield Hiway founded A.D. 1919; Sheridan Post Enterprise 20 June 1926; Billings Gazette 26 June 1926; Teepee Book, inscribed in memoriam; envelope containing map Custer Battlefield, publicity matter used by the Association and Custer Hiway folder; photo of Marine aviators [there had been a fly-over or two during the festivities]; photo of Fort Abraham Lincoln and of General George A. Custer by A. Risen, of Bismarck [presented by W.A. Falconer]; fifteen photographs of participants in Custer Fight by Barry; envelope containing three types of badges used by Association' official program; Burlington folder covering semi-centennial of the Little Big Horn.
One plaque, which was much less elaborate than now, as was the tomb itself [no wonder I missed it] was stolen. It read simply: "Unknown Soldier Member of Reno's Command Found Near River, June 1926 Big Horn County Historical Society 1968" I can't tell from either the newspaper accounts or the photographs if there was originally a plaque.
Get this book!! Conz - you'll love it for the cavalry photos, if nothing else.
Gordie, there was a time I was the only one, but now I'm the sad and lonely one..........................

Thanks, Bubba Frank!
I think I've been over there since 2001, but maybe not . . . . That would explain why I don't remember it!
