Hi Fred,
You know, I nearly posted something here last night before I worked out the answer for myself. I like this board, but I'm planning on finishing your book (and maybe giving it a second go) before I start making an arse of myself here too!
Cheers!

You know, I nearly posted something here last night before I worked out the answer for myself. I like this board... Conrad, You needn't worry about making an ass of yourself here; you have certainly shown me you know your stuff... and regardless, your few posts are smart and savvy and penetrating. This is a great message board, with some absolutely marvelous people. I cannot speak highly enough of many of them and a few will even post next door, most notably, Steve (benteeneast/AZ Ranger) and Beth. We have the irascible types-- me, DC, quincannon-- and with the exception of me in that trio, brilliant men who know their stuff cold. Wait until you meet up with montrose... talk about heroes...!!! This board tends to wander more, so that means getting off-topic, but still, even the off-road stuff is of great interest. Besides, montrose and DC will soon slap us back to topic. I hope you contribute... I'll watch your flanks if need be. Very best wishes, Fred.

At the suggestion of a wise member....
My name is Mark. I'm 36 and from GA. Married with one daughter. I have a BS in Management and MBA from the Stern School of Business, NYU. Currently working as SVP of BD for a F500.
Always had a passing interest in GAC and LBH. Recently stoked by a work colleague who has been to the battlefield a number of times. We don't see eye to eye on Reno/Benteen but always good conversations.
Hopefully the hazing period ends soon!!

Best wishes, Fred.

Mark, I am from England, I don’t bother with age, after all its just numbers after your name on a birth certificate, stay put and get to know everyone, it will come with time, in fact you are doing better than I did when I first joined, well you do speak the language for one, I put my early period on this board similar to an initiation, it was more hostile place back then, and the scars and still visible and there is shrapnel still in my body, so once you get passed fit for duty you should be ok.
Ian.

Hazing Mark is harassment without purpose.
You have not been hazed. You have been crucified for purpose, and that purpose is to convince you to put aside myth, and preconception, in favor of logical thinking. I told Beth in a private message just yesterday that the myth and legend that surrounds the Alamo, a subject I find far more fascinating than Custer and LBH, makes LBH and all that surrounds it seem tame as a newborn kitten in comparison. It is both our desire, and purpose here to cut through myth and legend and ascertain both fact and the circumstances behind fact. Anyone can read and parrot myth and legend. It takes work to determine fact.
Each of us came here, full of what "we knew", only to find that what we knew, was not knowing at all. We were all subjected to the same, put up or shut up treatment. Many have shut up and left, but over the years a core group has developed, each of us having expertise in various areas, and we have evolved into a process of logical scenario building. That process is not without arguments and fist fights. That is human nature. What you might take then as group think is really the product of that building process, where most here agree on the basic flow of battle, while reserving the right to their own version of the small details of that flow.
Now I hope you will get over the "They are picking on me phase" of your journey here, and it is a journey, the destination never attained, and do the many things that have been suggested to you. You need to start at the basics, and nothing in your background suggests that you have ever been exposed to them. You cannot ride a bicycle unless you know what the peddles are for and how the breaks work.
This remark was made to me just the other day. It fits here. You can spend a lifetime of study in learning the ways of the soldier, or you can just come up with enough money to buy a soldier's hat. So then it is a matter of study or the money to buy the hat. I hope you will choose the former.

I am a retired University of Mississippi administrator, age 65, and a resident of Oxford, MS. I have always been a History Buff and since I live within 3 hours of both Shiloh and Vicksburg, I tend to study the War and WW II more intently. I had the opportunity to visit the LBH field in 2004 for just a few hours. Have been looking for a way to return, without family, and spend more time walking the field and studying the terrain. I believe the study of the terrain is a vital part of understanding any engagement. I refer you to the Battle of Franklin as requiring detailed knowledge of the terrain along with the factors as essential. I am here to study and digest the contents of the board and look forward to more knowledge and informed opinions and ideas. I do remember Harlan Ellisons' quote "You are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled to your informed opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant." Regards Dave

Warfare cannot be studied unless you comprehend the importance of the terrain it is waged on. Very few battles are waged on the top of a billiards table.

Welcome Dave. It was seeing the terrain at Little Bighorn that took my interest from something I would just read about to a passion.
My great great grandfather died at Shiloh.

Chris: The list below were the ones I could find this afternoon. I have a few others somewhere, just not sure where.
The Custer Myth Son of the Morning Star Crazy Horse and Custer Custer's Fall --- Indian Side of the Story The Benteen and Goldin Letters The Battle of the Little Big Horn by Mari Sandoz Touched by Fire A Terrible Glory A Road We Do Not Know Killing Custer To Hell with Honor They Died with Custer Sixty-six Years in Custer's Shadow Little Big Horn Remembered Drawing Battle Lines Where Custer Fell Custer's Last Campaign Custer's Last Stand by Will Henry Fights on the Little Horn
Fred's book is next on the list. I wanted to brush up on some others before I read his work. It deserves preparation and study before I dig into it.
Regards Dave
