Anybody wishing to see a preview of the Custer segment of the BBC series "Wild West" can go to youtube and type in BBC and wild west. The film was made along the Cheyenne River in South Dakota during the Summer of 2006. It is scheduled to be released in England February 2007. It will be on the Discovery Channel in the US. (At this time, the US release date is unknown.)

Thanks for the tip-off. It looks rather promising, don't you think? Custer's too youthful and too frilly-haired, of course, but it does look as if they've taken the trouble to include quite a few characters who don't usually get an airing. I'll look forward to seeing this.

Why is it that everyone must die in slow motion? But it looks lovely ... thought GAC appears too young in the LBH scenes.

crzhrs,
There's a "search" box in the top right-hand corner of the youtube page. Just type BBC Wild West in there, as one phrase, and it'll come up. (I hope.)

Personally, I think Toby Stephens is a ham - the kind beloved of British theatre critics, but a ham nevertheless - and he was in the BBC's Jane Eyre too. He's actually about 36 or 37. I think Custer always looks older than he did thanks to that plastered down hair and heavy moustache.

Elisabeth:
I got to the site finally . . . not quite sure where the specific Custer clip was. There are a bunch of others to look at.
One worth watching is "The Legend of Crazy Horse" old/new photos of Indians/Military told to a song about Crazy Horse/Custer/Reservations, etc.
Quite moving . . .

Crz--BBC's Wild West:
The first clip is of Wyatt Earp--a nice long one that runs almost two and a half minutes. After tha is GAC's time to shine, then Billy the Kid.
Another note is that the guy cast as Reno doesn't appear to be particularly sniveling or slimy. That's sort of a nice change! Didn't see any grey hair on Benteen, however, though the lighting wasn't particularly bright.
NOTE: I just went to You Tube to get the link, but saw that the BBC had removed the preview for copyright infringement! I thought You Tube was getting more rights these days ... sigh.
Regards, LMC

Such a pity they've pulled the clip. One consolation: the BBC is quite sharp about exploiting its assets, so the chances are it'll be out on DVD fairly quickly. In UK (Region 2) format, of course -- but most DVD players are multi-region these days, aren't they?
jjm: I suppose Toby Stephens can be a bit of a ham sometimes ... (Electrifying on stage, though. You should have seen his Coriolanus a few years back. Wow.) But mightn't that work rather well for a showman like Custer? It could be very interesting casting. He's more a character actor than a leading man, so if he's done any research at all we could get our very first accurate Custer, with all the quirks and tics: the stammer, the brusque delivery, all that. The Benteen/newspaper scene seemed to give some promise of that. And ginger, not blond ... and he can ride ... No, I think it could be OK, myself.

I first saw him on stage, unfortunately, in Phedre, opposite Diana Rigg. No scenery was left unchewed.

Oh, I LOVED that! Thought it was so brave of them to chew scenery when scenery-chewing was what was required! Obviously we'll have to agree to differ, then. (What about la Rigg in that, though? Powerful, or what? Hard to do Greek tragedy completely naturalistically, after all ...)
Agree, there was a certain amount of nostril-flaring in Jane Eyre, but then Rochester's a fairly melodramtic character; a Victorian spinster's wet-dream. I thought he did OK with that, personally; he gave the character some warmth. And the relationship between the two played out well. (Mostly her doing, it's true.)
Well, it'll be interesting to see how it works out. Measured against previous contenders -- Robert Shaw, wrong script; Gary Cole, no neck and couldn't ride; Errol Flynn, wonderful but idealised -- I'd have thought he stands a 50-50 chance of doing something reasonable ...?

Well, gee, what a surprise...the NPS has blocked youtube. I'll just have to wait until I get home. But that won't keep me from my required goofing off... By the way, we found out what's really going on. The sites have been blocked by a contractor in Washington, and they CHARGE to unblock each site!
