I received the following note today. Please keep in mind that the book is under copyright protection, so it cannot be reproduced online. Does anyone know of an inexpensive source for the book? -- Thanks, Diane
I am a student at San Jose State University, and in the Fall I will be taking a History class where I will be able to do research on Custer. My professor recommended a book by Kenneth Hammer, Men with Custer: Biographies of the 7th Cavalry, June 25, 1876. I was hoping there was a way I could search this book briefly or perhaps pay for certain chapters. The book is very expensive, and it is probably one of the few Custer books that I don't personally own. (I grew up with a Father who was a Custer Historian, and I enjoyed and appreciated much of the Historical Facts he presented me as opposed to what was printed in the mainstream press). I would be so grateful for any help.

I think the book is undergoing a revision at this time. It is a very valuable resource. Custer Battlefield Museum and Historical Association it the publisher. I don't know what the time table is for the revision, but when it comes out, you might try to get a copy then.

Thank you for your response regarding the revision, I will definitely follow up on that. I hope to find other means in which to scan over this book by Hammer. I would be grateful for any help.

Debbie,
You should be aware that "Men With Custer" is just that, biographies of "men with Custer" and does not describe the Battle of the Little Big Horn. I don't know what you're looking for specifically. MWC documents each 7th Cavalryman in 1876, with stats like DOB, place of birth, height, weight, age, military record, life after discharge (for the lucky ones) etc. It is a reference manual, really. If you are interested in something in particular here, let me know. I have the book.

Guidon 7, You mentioned that you have a copy of Hammer's "Men with Custer". Does it contain any information on Pvt Roman Rutten of M Co in Reno's Battalion at the fight?

Peter,
There is a page devoted to Rutten in that book. I have sent it to you via your e-mail address.
