While browsing in the public library today I noticed a Geanological magazine that had a short article about the number of civil war veterans that are buried in cemeteries here in Australia. About 146 veterans are interred in different plots in several states by far the majority were Union men. It had never occured to me that so many would have roamed so far from home. Any way for whats it s worth there you have it. craw.

"Hundred of thousands of individuals from all over the world participated in the American 'War Between the States'; many in the north forcibly and against their will, inducted into Union service right off ships as they immigrated to America seeking a better life."
I had never read that before, and it certainly adds food for thought. Can you imagine, thinking you're coming to the "New World" to start a new life of freedom but instead being plucked off the ship and sent into the bloodiest of wars? Horrible.
Thanks for introducing the topic, crawdaddo, and for the link, gocav. This is certainly worthy of discussion on the Civil War board.

Wasn't there a scene showing Irish men/boys being thusly conscripted or coerced in Gangs Of New York? That site has entirely too much information for old guys like me, with not-so-brief bios of everyone.
Gordie, boys and girls together, me and Mamie O'Rourke, tripped the light fantastic on the sidewalks of New York..................................................
