Good luck with your crusade against ignorance and apathy. Probably the only way to inject new blood into anything, is to first drain the old......................

The main reason I didn't vote in the recent election is that I knew nothing about any of the people involved in any personal sense, and so felt it would have been irresponsible to vote just by picking a name. I really think a lot more transparency, especially in regard to finances, would be a good idea. And by the way, besides the newsletter and the Research Review, what do they do with the money?

There is another book in the planning stage, Custer and His Times, Book Six. I'm not sure how much it costs to publish such books but, theoretically at least, they should make the money back from sales. Other than that, they give $1,000 seed money to each conference chair but, again, that money should be made back.
Every once in a while, they'll donate $1,000 to another organization. As examples, they gave $1,000 to the Patton Museum when the conference was in Louisville (out of the conference money though) and they gave $1,000 to Friends to help defray the expense of the new webcams. People have suggested scholarships, donations to other related causes, etc., but the board has been very tight with the buck.
I probably wouldn't be so adverse to the quest to make money IF it went to worthy pursuits or was occasionally gifted to the battlefield. I heard one old-timer ask, "What's the battlefield ever done for us?" That's the attitude that stinks.

The question should really be 'What has the current BOD ever done for us?" The battlefield should have given them a worthwhile purpose in life but that kind of attitude shows that they have no purpose in their lives other than to feel important by purporting to be in charge of something. Melani, there is a world of sifference between abstaining from voting because you are unhappy with the quality of information you have about the candidates and simply not ever voting because you can't be bothered. For once, I am not in accord with Diane when she says that we will have to wait until the current BOD gives up. I believe that with the right legal guidance and a rallying cry to those members who really care, the requirements of the LBHA Constitution for a 2/3 majority of members attending an annual meeting will be met and the BOD can be removed as members at the 2008 conference. BTW Gordie how about - just when you thought that you had a grip, reality sneaks off, it gives you the slip...

I wish I believed it could happen, Hunk, but the members are as previously described. As long as they get their publications and (those who go) have a good time at the conferences, they'll vote for anything and the good old boys count on it. The most recent examples are the last two amendments.
The Ninth Amendment changed when the BOD election would take place, making the election in the spring rather than the fall. For what reason? The reason given was so that the new board would meet sooner (at conferences) closer to the date of their election. Big deal! The current chair never asks the board's opinion about anything anyway. All that amendment did was make it more difficult to find a CPA to tally the votes during tax season.
The Tenth Amendment was prompted by their fear that I would run for the board while Chuck was the chair. When they were drafting it (which they said took months!) they didn't know Chuck didn't want to be chair again. All that amendment does is remove another layer of the power to choose from the members. Forget the Merkels, there have been other couples who have offered their time to the organization (Tom and Alice O'Neil come to mind) and served admirably and well. In any event, if the members didn't want two married board members, they could make that clear with their votes.
That quote about the battlefield is true and accurate and shameful.

Hunk:
Me and Ryland Peter was running off to join the circus in a Little Village down by the Buffalo River. We got gypped, tryin' to let 'er rip, and wound up tearing through the cottonfields into a bus shelter........You know how that goes.
Gordie, I've been circlin' the wagons down at Times Square............................

Gordie,
You're good dude! I'll just put on my Daddy's wing-tips. But I like the lyric I quoted. It kind of fits some of the more frustrating moments that crop doing Custer/LBH research.
Hunk I better read between the lines...

Goddess, there has got to be a way forward. We can't let them win by default. Let us all keep searching for the chink in their zimmer frames.
Encouraging hugs (see I'm addicted)

For what it is worth I think that anything you do to keep this message board alive is one thing. I was at the last conference and I did get the impression that they wanted this board taken down. It is my opinion that at least one member of the board finds this message board irritating. They don't like the idea of people, members or non-members, being able to talk about their actions.

I imagine they want it taken down because they know absolutely nothing about it. Most of the people at the top of the lbha don't own a computer...they're old, I mean really old. Older than Fred or Gordie I think.
