Maybe this thread exists elsewhere, but what would you say were the biggest medical problems faced by the men of the 7th in 1876? More than a few were in a hospital bed at FAL up until May 17, 1876.

This thread maybe a little, other discussions are thankfully going on  I was going to answer this, but I forgot. Serving in any Frontier army was in the 1870s, be it on the Plains or in India of South Africa, was bound to cause a ton of different problems and health issues. In "They Died with Custer" by Scott and friends, there is an entire chapter (chapter 6, named "The not-so-romantic Frontier") dedicated to health and illness among the troopers. I looked quickly, and this sentence jumped at me: "The medical records indicate that the men of the Seventh who were with Custer in 1876 were treated in 1 721 separate instances for seventy-six different disease and injury categories between the formation of the formation and June 14, 1876." So the answer is... al loot  No but seriously, there is a n-detail, two page table with number of cases of different illnesses there. Top 5 are Fever, Rheumatism,Diarrhea, Contusions and Catarrh, in that order. Only 4 registered accounts of tapeworm, though. I would bet this book is on googlebooks or some other electronic place. If I had a scanner I'd put it up here, but I don't. Geir |

Thanks, Geir. That's one of the (many, I bet) books I don't have. Thanks and I'll check it out. I notice that venereal disease is not on the list of most-contracted illnesses. Interesting. I'd like to see the checklist that made a soldier "unfit for the rigors of the frontier." Some who gained that distinction were nevertheless enlisted into hospital duty, however one, Pvt. Cather, ended up dying with F Company, I believe.

Cather, ended up dying with F Company, I believe. I'm at work now so can't check. But, it would not surprise me if subjects regarding sex would be held "off the books" due to Victorian sensibilities. Mutilation, gunshots etc...no problem. The drip? Not so much. I'll take a look later, the chapter has several pages regarding illness and health, I'm pretty sure the subject is mentioned if not in the lists. All the best, Noggy |
