If you couldn't tell by my username I've got a particular interest in the long time captain of company A Myles Moylan. Something that anyone who has researched has noticed is how throughout his life he claimed to have been born in two different places with not much solid evidence for either. Early on in his career he claimed to have been born in Tuam, Ireland and had immigrated to Massachusetts while very young. While reenlisting into the army during the middle of the civil war he would claim that he was actually born in Amesbury, Massachusetts and went with that for the rest of his life. I've never looked too deeply into the issue and I want to know the general consensus on his birthplace (if there is one) from people more knowledgeable than me.

I have come to rely on the Military Register of Custer's Last Command by Roger L. Williams as my source for biographical information because Williams used primary sources for his compilations. He shows Moylan born in Amesbury, but that isn't proof positive if Myles lied when enlisting.
While visiting San Diego in 2009, my husband and I visited Moylan's grave and the house where he died, which was then a law office. The people were welcoming and let us go through the house, including the room in which Myles died.
Best wishes, Diane

Interestingly, Wiki also operates with a "Born either here or there", but seem to have more links in favor of him being born in Ireland 1 vs 4).

While Myles Moylan's place of birth remains a mystery, it is interesting to note that Morris Farrar, the son of a Massachusetts father and an Irish mother, also gave Amesbury, MA, as his place of birth on enlistment, even though he was born in Australia! However, he elsewhere stated it was in New South Wales, Australia, which itself is at odds with a written family history which says Victoria. Yet another mystery that is never likely to be solved.

Hm, what on earth is the deal with Amesbury, I wonder. Can this really just be a coincidence? I'm away for the time being, if anyone has for example a ebook version of Participants or something, it would be interesting to see if there a more Amesbury potential natives Noggy

Noggy It does seem from my own research that more sources point towards him being born in Ireland. He also only started claiming to be born in Amesbury after enlisting under an assumed name during the civil war.

Noggy, You can run a search on my website at littlebighorn.info/Cavalry.htm. I just ran a search for Amesbury that returned with Moylan and Farrar. We'll probably never know why both men listed Amesbury. I just checked Ancestry.com for Morris Farrar and found only one family tree. Morris is listed as being born in Australia, but his father is listed as born in Massachusetts. That's strange. I found 29 family trees for Moylan, and they appear to favor Massachusetts although many also list Ireland as his birthplace. These trees are usually prepared by amateur family genealogists, so events may not be properly sourced. I checked one tree that shows him born in Ireland and found that Myles was the youngest of six children. His oldest brother is shown as being born in Ireland but married in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in 1843. (Newburyport is a short distance from Amesbury.) If so, Myles would have immigrated here by the time he was five, so Amesbury may have been the only home he remembered when he enlisted. Just guessing. . . . Best wishes, Diane

Best wishes, Diane I see they only operate with one birth place. If they leave out potential other birth places, there may still be more but it is what it is. I guess another reason for claiming being born in the States, might have been to appear to be a "real" American? And not an immigrant. Of course just a speculation, but many Irish had a tough time when arriving. All the best, Noggy

Well, I have a frined who works with immigration, I'll let him know to be alert when people arrive, claiming to be from certain parts of Massachusetts... All the best, Noggy
