Hi,
If anyone have some information related to Emil O Jonson (in the register of enlistment as E. O. Jonson in St Paul June 1874) I would be grateful if you can share it with me. I am trying to find out where he originally came from in Sweden and where he ended up after he left the 7th Cavalry. He deserted 1878.

In Fred Wagner's book about participants in the battle, he lists him as born in Kalmar. N

Strictly speaking the Regs of Enlistment show his surname as ‘Jonsan’ and place of birth as ‘Kilmar’ - both, I assume being clerical errors. As someone who was a two-time deserter from the U.S. Army it seems logical that the first thing Jonson would do on the run would be to change his name. If so, the chances of identifying him. are remote, to say the least.

Well, I don't know where the thread starter lives, but if he is in my neck of the woods (Scandinavia), he could try checking church books (probably not the right word). In the 1800s basically everyone around were written in in their local church, and at least here n Norway these have to a large degree been digitalised, proving to be a huge asset for local historians. There is no "Kilmar" in Sweden, but Kalmar is both a town and a "län", with "län" probably best being translated into County. As far as I can remember, our Norwegian contingent are trackable via church books. Ofc, if one lives in the US it is harder

Thanks all, for your thoughts. All possible ways have been exhausted (by me) over there years i have been looking for this guy for quit some time. As you correctly says, Kalmar is both a town/city and a county. I have a copy of his enlistment in St Paul (Fort Snelling) which could have been a very good help to trace him back to Sweden and possible ancestors both in Sweden and N.A. But no succes so far. If anyone ends up in Fort Snelling and find any interesting books et me know. BR. Peter Sweden

Peter Sweden I'm not familiar with it myself, but doesn't Ellis Island have some sort of research center or records open to the public? Us Norwegians passed through there when making the trip, I'd assume Swedes and most European immigrants (including the Trumps ) did so too. All the best, Noggy

Hi Noggy, good thought but Ellis Island open in 1892. Before that Year immigrants came to Castle Garden at the southern part of Manhattan. Castle Garden records are not so easy to find, at least not for me? Furthermore E.O. Jonson must have arrived to U.S. somewhere between his birth year 1853 (+/-) and no later than 1874. I think there were few more cities (than NY) immigrants came to but not sure which? BR Peter

Not sure which cities immigrants arrived at, I checked quickly about Norwegians which in large part probably would take the same route as Swedes, and only saw New York being mentioned. I hope you find the information you are looking for Noggy
