May have asked this previously but as part of my study of a British officer in 1879, it was rumoured that he had in his possession a Colt peacemaker revolver, though quite doubtful it was what he had on him when he died.
On doing some research, it appears that in around the early-mid 1870s peacemakers were indeed shipped to Britain, further I obtained a book solely about the British model of this gun.
in the blurb inside the cover, the author actually mentions Isandhlwana and the possibility this gun was present on the battlefield, though none were found or located, most revolvers captured by the Zulus were never seen again, so it may have indeed been the case, not only that at least one was present, but was in the possession of my studied officer.
Its so interesting, it made me wonder if other firearms from America were shipped to Britain at this time, and either given a new designation or even modified for military/civilian circles, or even ended up in South Africa through official means or even gunrunning using ex-ACW firearms.
Not sure if after the ACW, ex-soldiers may have headed to Africa to seek their fortune, which was also known for its gold and diamonds.
Anyone aware of these details ?
