I've searched high and low and can't find the reason for Boston Custer's poor health. He had to have been somewhat fit to be on a campaign with his brothers even if he was just there to sample the fine air. Seems like rheumatism and perhaps lung issues ran in the family (Nevin,) but does anyone have a source I can follow to confirm Boston's ailment(s)?

When we know how many of the 7th's members had some sort of handicaps, it may seem strange. It looks like at one point, before parting ways with the Far West, Boston considered dropping out, maybe due to health. In "A terrible Glory" by Donovan, the author mentions regarding going on the expedition; "(...) the fresh air on the plains could mend his consumptive tendencies." I can't remember reading a very precise description of exactly what Boston Custer's "poor health", though. All the best, Noggy

Custer had a history of employing family. He employed Dad in Texas, Boston previously on the Black Hills expedition, and his nephew on the LBH. We all know this was nothing new. Previously and even currently government(our) employees have been padding their families and friends pockets when they could.
With regards to any of the health frailties, I know little.
Regards, Tom
