I received a message from someone who will be visiting the battlefield for the first time. He wants to know:
1) Best time of year to visit the battlefield?
2) Recommended tour guides for a small group, over a couple of days?
Your opinions are welcome!

Hello all! So, I was thinking about visiting the Little Bighorn battlefield again next month (last time I went to visit it was last year – and it was super fun!). But I was thinking, how come there are not more trails for the visitors to walk on to visit other areas of the park? I mean it seems that the National Park Service could put in more trails, even though there may be no soldier markers on those trails. Those trails could be placed so they are available to walk on (like the Deep ravine trail) and are close to the visitors center and the parking lot. Not something that you have to drive to, like the other trails that are available. Those trails could include trails that goes off of the Deep ravine trail and approach closer to the Little Bighorn River. Or there could be a trail that cuts across part of the battlefield from the Deep ravine trail and continues down along a branch of part of the Deep ravine. Anyway, you get the idea! In the “old days” of the park, it is my understanding that the visitors could walk all over the battlefield. You can’t do that anymore! I have included a Google earth view of the current Deep ravine trail. The trails I think would be fun for the NPS to add are shown in yellow (and for those of you that read my other posts on this forum, notice how I avoided a big part of the Forgotten Gulch – ha, ha, ha, etc!). Although my trail ideas are only an example, I am certain that there are a multitude of other trail ideas that could be thought of. I mean what would the NPS be concerned about? Slightly changing areas of the battlefield? I think they are way beyond that type of thinking already! Of course, these days nothing is as simple as it sounds! To put in a couple of new trails in the park, the NPS would probably be required to have a team of their archeologists with metal detectors scouring the planned trails to see if there are any artifacts. Hey, since they would be there anyway, they could check out and take some core samples of the Forgotten Gulch area! Ha, ha, ha, ha, etc! Yeah, I will send them another letter about it and probably have to wait till “hell freezes over” to hear anything back from them (probably just like my Forgotten Gulch book thing!!). No, I will not send them a letter! Just another idea from this old guy about the new trail stuff! Onward my friends! (I didn't know where to post this, so I just took a wild guess and I am probably wrong, again!). Attachments:![](//storage.proboards.com/396523/thumbnailer/cZhnnOXpCcZsNrIk0XWX.png)

Dan,
The NPS doesn't allow people to wander around because the battlefield should remain as pristine as possible. You aren't the first to have a theory about something and want to sample the soil.
Normally, the Deep Ravine trail and Keogh's area would be open and manned by volunteers during the anniversary weekend. (My husband and I have manned those areas in the past.) However, since the museum is undergoing renovations, the volunteer groups are meeting elsewhere this year.
Join CBHMA; they usually have tours of the battlefield on the anniversary weekend that will take you places restricted from the public. Skip this year; go in 2025. Definitely go for the 150th in 2026.
Best wishes, Diane

Hello Diane!
Thank you for your thoughts and information. Much appreciated! I may eventually join the CBHMA. (An interesting side note here. Checking my files I did send the CBHMA an email about my thoughts about the Forgotten ravine - and how to locate my posts on this forum- on July 24th, 2023!. No reply as yet! Maybe I sent it to the wrong person at the CBHMA? Anyway, probably just another one of my correspondence to various agencies that ended up in the trash!)
Oh well my friend! The adventure continues!
