Hello! Do you guys know if the 5 button M1874 fatigue blouse had one or two cuff buttons? I know that reenactment providers usually sell them with two cuff buttons (I think smaller than the breast buttons) but I remember on a link (which at the moment cannot find) it was written that it was prescribed with only one button. Or maybe the regulation prescribed one but they were modified in the field? Also, do you know if soldiers of the 7th at the LBH did wear the 1875 experimental blue shirt? Thank you for your kind attention.

Thank you for your kind attention. Tjenare. Is this what you are looking for? : www.arizonacivilwarcouncilinc.com/Indian%20Wars%20Uniform%20Gear%20Weapons%20Guide%202.pdf It says 2 small cuff buttons. I guess there were modifications and different models of a lot of equipment, so perhaps both variants could have been around? I bet Fred could tell you the facts here, he has written about uniforms before but all I could find here at this time is this thread lbha.proboards.com/thread/4173 . Hope he or someone else can chime in. Noggy

Tack Noggy! I know it sounds a bit pedantic, but that is because, well, maybe I AM pedantic:))) You msg actually answered to my second question. As for the 1874 enlisted blouse, sutlers for reenactment generally sell it with 2 cuff buttons but I suspect that the regulation prescribed one. From the Survey of U.S. Army Uniforms, Weapons and Accoutrements: 'Issue of the pleated blouse was stopped and the pattern 1874 sack coat was issued in its place. The new coat singlebreasted with five brass buttons in front and one on each cuff;' www.slideshare.net/GravityMedia/survey-of-us-army-uI guess in the field you would find both variants. The US Army of the mid 1870s was not very keen of following regulations it seems. And some regulations could be quite absurd. For instance, trousers were supposed to be worn over the boots, while many men just tucked them inside. I guess this regulation comes from the fact that the M1872 patter cavalry boots were shorter than those from the Civil War period, still it would have taken an awful lot of time to fit the trousers over them. Comments from pedantic posters are welcome!
