Shortly after the battle, they knew they had to leave because of the numerous soldiers in the area, so the tribes split up and went their separate ways.
The defeat of Custer embarrassed the U.S. military. To avenge for this loss, it assigned "thousands of more soldiers to the area." Over the next few months, the military forced many of the Lakota to surrender, but their primary objective, Sitting Bull, eluded them.
