Magpie All the issues you raise also apply to your spreadout troops . Your spread out troops are strong nowhere . While a concentrated grouping can bring most of it's potential firepower to bear on an advancing enemy. You have a defensive system in operation . Spread out you have nothing but desperate isolated individuals. A confident aggressive front with periods of rapid fire [does not matter if you are hitting anything nor does the expenditure of ammo matter]could keep the Indians at long range. Custer at least has a chance of going down fighting and exacting a price if he has an organised defence , spread out he has none. Cheers

Take one sheet of 3 dimensional paper and show me (use elevations). Ammo matters when your out but if you think it will help moral go ahead give the 21 gun salute.

Magpie Take one sheet of 3 dimensional paper and show me (use elevations). Figure it out yourself .Incoming on an elevated position is going high not "horizontal"as outgoing would be, giving an advantage to the defenders.
Ammo matters when your out but if you think it will help moral go ahead give the 21 gun salute. The enemy have no idea as to the amount of ammo you have .You have to fire at a rate that will at least pin them down . You can hoard ammo and let them get close or you can bluff them. Cheers

Cheers Ah yes the classic element but an Officer testifying at RCOI pointed out your enemy can surround your position and fire at will with no fear of killing their fellows on the other side. You've heard of card counters right? Well basic Indian tactics are to get fools to expend their ammunition. You have a valid point about not being able to stop the blitz if you let them in too close. There is no reason for them to blitz. There is no clock. They don't like to die. There is no pressure. If they get within 200 feet they will just lob arrows till we are both dead. I think you can pin with less ammo expenditures than a general firing. I think the Indians usually fight that way against each other. On the Reno side only known soldier marksmen were allowed to shoot during the some 30 hours of engagement. One counter charge of 15 minutes. The Indians don't mass so your horizontal shot will hit nothing. You however are suggesting massing and your hill will protect at only direct angles and the Indians will use glancing angles whereby you'll be 2 deep at least
