www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2015/06/05/interactive_documentary_the_fallen_of_world_war_ii_animates_devastating.htmlLiked this because he was atop the definition of 'casualty' and because he points out controversial conclusions. It's mostly dead on. A few errors, the Japanese invasion of Manchuria/China was early in 1931, well beyond the six years credited for the war under consideration. Don't know if those deaths are included in the totals. If not, China lost a hell of a lot more people than here credited. The Pacific War was mostly a naval and air war, Europe and Africa land and air for the US. We know that, but I'd bet most today do not. When you tally up the Soviet and Chinese dead, even if a lot of it was self inflicted, it makes it easier to understand they aren't as thrilled about celebrating Dday when we don't do much for their important anniversaries. Americans were never given an accurate picture of the war till recently. Only 3-15% of German forces against the west. Japan kept most of its army in China.

The percentage deployed in the West/Italy was higher than 15%, but not by a great amount.
Why I always try and mention Bagration when people talk Overlord.
The German Army was ground down in the Soviet Union.

The German Army was ground down in the Soviet Union. WO There was an old saying that WW2 was won with British brains, American Industry, and Russian blood. I think that there is a lot of truth in that. Many in the west never truly understood the immense suffering and loss that the Soviet Union went trough and their consequential desire for satellite states to serve as a buffer against any future invasion.

Jodak,
Absolutely. Hard for many to imagine the sheer carnage of battles like Prokhorovka. No prisoners being taken when a Soviet Guards Army locks horn with an SS Panzer Corps....

The very mention of the Eastern Front sent shivers through the German troops. I have read a few memories by German troops and they refer to the Eastern Front as a sausage grinder. The Russian troops were poorly equipped and poorly lead in many instances. Stalingrad was hell on earth for both sides. I am glad you mentioned Bagration since the Eastern Front was and still is often ignored in spite of the vast number of men on both sides. Regards Dave

Here are just some of the losses suffered by the Hungarians at Stalingrad alone; Ian.
