Due to current events (Austin flooding), I recalled reading that Shoal Creek was one of Custer and his wife's favorite riding areas so I went looking for easily searchable information about his connection to the area. One of the things I found that kind of amused me was when first arrived in Austin he eyed Woodlawn aka Pease Mansion as his headquarters wiki link with plans to have his men quartered on the extensive lawns. Locals quickly discouraged him though and he set up housekeeping at the the old Blind Asylum now called the Arno Nowotny Building linkI've read that Libbie wrote fondly about how much room they had in that building but I wonder how much see would have gushed if they were in Woodlawn.

Don't get me started on her Beth ----- Please. Sorry QC. I do know if you were invited to an evening of fine dining and given a choice between Lucrezia Borgia and Libbie Custer, you would select Lucrezia.

You bet your sweet I would.
I think something that DC posted the other day tickled me to the point I still can't stop laughing, about the bones buried at WP. If you have ever been there you would know that she is buried at his feet. Don't know if that is on purpose or not, don't care, but that part of the cemetery is very crowded. The thought of her residing by bones that are just liable to be those of Private Snuffy for eternity sends me into convulsions of joy.

I've not been to WP but thanks to Google it is possible to 'walk' the cemetery there, so I know what you mean about how crowded it is and how she is at his feet--something I found extremely ironic because, well she doesn't strike me as the type of woman who was very subservient. BTW, along with Private Snuffy, I wonder if there are a few old nag bones. Would a shorter horse rib look all that different from a long human bone to someone who doesn't have a clue about how many bones are in a body. When you look at the archaeology of other graves, it seems they just grabbed a few long bones and called it good. Have you ever seen pictures of the statue that used to be on top of that pedestal instead of the obelisk? I can't say I blame Libbie for wanting it removed.

No I have not seen the statue, but I could find a way of blaming Fluffy for the price of milk, eggs, and butter.
Strikes me as a woman who would think it her wifely duty to be adoringly buried at her man child husbands feet. That is all show. Her behind the scenes machinations were all for go. That's how they all, the Mrs. Colonels and the Mrs. Generals operate, and that is why I despise them so. And yes despise is the right and proper word on this occasion. Hate is something I do not do. It is counterproductive and only harms the one who hates in the end. Despise is a horse of a different color. You despise the dog dung you step in when the neighbor's dog craps on your lawn.
