There is a fellow from Montana who comes on this site periodically, using the moniker, "sfchemist." His name is Wayne Stevenson. I do not know him except from these boards and some personal e-mails over the years, but Wayne and I had a mutual experience, though at different times. We both served in the Army, in Germany, in Wuerzburg, at Leighton Barracks, the HQ of the 3rd Infantry Division. Wayne was there after I left-- he is about 4 or 5 years younger than I am-- but us old Leighton/Wuerzburg guys seem to have this uncommon bond. Plus, as it turns out, Wayne is an extremely nice person, who, one day, I would dearly love to meet... just because he is so nice.
Anyway, he took on this idiot "vben"/"robb" with a comment on Amazon, something I appreciated as much as you might imagine. When I e-mailed him to thank him for his kind words in his comments, he e-mailed me back and as people our ages would do, he told me he had some fairly serious heart issues.
Typical Wayne, it seems, he sloughed them off, accepting his lot with equanimity and grace and telling me whatever time he has he will enjoy to the fullest. Hell, like any of us, he could live to a ripe old, old age, but with some heartfelt prayers and good wishes, maybe a good guy like Wayne could live even longer. I would hope so.
Like many of you, Wayne has helped make the journey for guys like me a lot more enjoyable. Life is like that: we "meet" so many awfully nice people. For me, Wayne is one of them... he will always be in my prayers, with an equal prayer that one day he and I can meet up over a beer.
Best wishes, Fred.
