Tom Thank you for the post. I have very little material that deals with Keogh. Most of my studying of the War deals with the infantry. I only know of Keogh at Gettysburg from all that I have read of Buford and then when Reynold's arrival and the 1st Corps took over. If you have more on Keogh please share. I feel a little foolish having never given much thought to Keogh or any of the deceased officers at the LBH. My word, between studying Fred's book, looking up what skimpy materials I have on the Alamo, studying RN and US Navy ships during WW II and learning about Keogh, I do believe my dance card is full. I am off to the library tomorrow. Regards Dave There's this killer artist named Mort Kunstler....He does all kinds of War Between the States paintings (I have a print of his "Review at Moss Neck") and some of the Old West. One his paintings depicts Buford and his staff on the field on the morning of 01 July 1863. Captain Keogh is included in the painting... Sincerely, Duane

What did Benteen know when he reached the approach to the valley? He knew there were no villages where he scouted and he knew Custer had found a big village. Nothing more. He relys on a scout to tell him which trail to follow as he doesn't know. When he reaches Reno the retreat is still happening. He doesn't know Custer has divided his troops. He finds Reno in a bad state, not because Reno is drunk or afraid or anything else, but because he is a human being who has been in a very traumatic event. Benteen needs time to find out what is going on because when he arrives he knows nothing of what Custer has done. Let's try to remember that when we time how long he was at Reno Hill. Secondly Reno with 3 companies has managed to break contact and save most of his command and moved to a place of some safety. Why would Benteen think that Custer with 5 companies was incapable of accomplishing the same result? Benteen does not know Custer has divided again. With hundreds of warriors around why would you send some men to Custer? What would be the point? Custer has 5 companies and is a Brevet General why would he not be able to do what Reno had done? Cheers

Well stated, Mac. That sums up the situation perfectly.
