Boy he really had "boyish good looks" (if that is your type.) It must have been hard at first to get people to take him serious. Quite a difference from the studio shot from just before the 76 campaign.
Are the others in the picture identified?

I think the picture was taken while Pleasonton was still in charge of Cavalry Circa 1863. Far right seated Merritt.

I looked Merritt up since my Civil War knowledge is shaky. One line really struck me "He died peacefully in 1910, the only one of the 1863 promotees to do so, and is now interred at West Point."
It really brings hope the sacrifices so many people made for our futures. My own great-great grandfather died at Shiloh when my great grandfather was three. I'd love someday to find a picture of him but it is unlikely.

I don't know if it is because it is a more formal picture but he looks a lot older. Poor guy he really was losing his hair young.

Hair loss due to excessive use of cinnamon oil on his hair.

Cinnamon oil is supposed to prevent hair loss. Poor guy needs to get his money back. He should have used rosemary, it smells better and is supposed to help with male pattern baldness and made the hair shiny
