Dumaine, 32mo in printed blue paper wraps, 288pp with 1845 addendum, 66pp with 38 plates. This copy has inscription on free front end page in Keogh's hand with his name and date of 1st Jan. 1861 and on rear end paper Battle of Castlefedardo September 29/60, which referrers to The Pope's Irish Army in the 1860 Italian campaign. Ireland's Battalion of St Patrick was mercifully brief. Poorly armed and barely trained, its 1,000 men were no match for the professional soldiers of Giuseppi Garibaldi and the King of Sardinia. The Irish were fortunate to be able to surrender at Spoleto and Castlefidardo with only a few score casualties. Keogh was a Captain with these Irishmen fighting for the Pope. (EST $800-$1000) Condition: Missing covers, soiled and chipped front and rear end papers with taped margins of same, withdrawn ink stamp on rear from "Nebraska State Historical Society."
