The grave of W. J. McClinton in the Sheridan, Wyoming Mount Hope Cemetery. Just to make things confusing, the folks in Big Horn, Wyoming, 6 miles south of Sheridan, have a Mt. Hope Cemetery, but this is in Sheridan. W. J. McClinton was with General Crook's command in the 1876 Sioux/Cheyenne campaign. At the Battle of Slim Buttes,SD, 3 months after the Little Bighorn debacle, McClinton recovered the 7th Cavalry guidon flag that had been taken from Custer's troops at the Little Bighorn. McClinton later settled at Sheridan, where he lived out his life, happily married, and died on January 4th, 1895. It was a massive heart attack. One newspaper notice of the death says, "During a dance at Sheridan Friday evening, W. J. McClinton, the leader of the orchestra, was just starting on a waltz a few minutes past midnight, when he gave a gasp, dropped the violin, fell to the floor, and all was over." Another notice read in part, that McClinton was, "Struck with Death," "suddenly summoned to the unknown beyond," and, "the spark of life had flown." Attachments:
