Jinlian, I'm confused. Are you saying that the Crow man you identify as"Crazy Head," arrested in the 1887 "Sword Bearer Uprising" is the same individual as Sword Bearer, a.k.a. "Wraps Up His Tail"? Or, are you talking about another individual? I understand that Sword Bearer was killed in that mess. There were only five or six other Crow youths involved in the "uprising," and I don't recall reading that any of them were arrested, although Two Whistles was shot in the arm and had to have it amputated. He is buried at Little Bighorn.

no, I didn't identify these two people as the same one. I was just saying that Crazy Head (the man in the photo posted by Hin Tamaheca) was one of the important Crow chiefs (the other being Deaf Bull) who joined Sword Bearer/Wraps Up His Tail in 1887. Sword Bearer was indeed killed by Crow policeman Fire Bear, but a number of his followers, Crazy Head and his son Knows His Coup among them, were arrested and confined at Fort Snelling for a year or so.
The small group of young Crow warriors you're referring to are probably the ones led by Sword Bearer himself who, in the beginning of the uprise, rode through Crow Agency and fired at the roofs of the main buildings (this fact inspired a famous Frederick Remington illustration). It's true that not many people followed Sword Bearer, but it's likely that in the end his companions amounted to 100-150.
There's a quite detailed description of the Sword Bearer uprise in Parading through history: the making of the Crow nation in America, 1805-1935 by Frederick E. Hoxie; another good account is in the "Montana Magazine of Western History", 1986 spring issue “Sword Bearer and the ‘Crow Outbreak,’ 1887” by Colin G. Calloway.

I have a great account re. Crow "Two Whistles," who was one of the youths involved in the uprising, given to me by Joe Medicine Crow, who as a boy was neighbors with Two Whistles. Joe told among other things how Two Whistles liked to play poker, and despite his stumpy arm, (he had his arm amputated following the "uprising, after he was shot) Two Whistles could deal the cards with his one good hand. He was also pretty adept at butchering cattle that he occasionly stole from the adjacent white ranching families.

@emily: the only source coming up to my mind right now is the Sitting Bull biography by Vestal - there's no reference to it even in Ernie LaPointe's book on his great-grandfather. As the Linderman one, it's not a lenghty account, but the difference in their viewpoints is nevertheless striking. There's also a correspondence between Crow agent Henry Williamson and James McLaughlin - Williamson basically asked McLaughlin to do to his best to prevent the Hunkpapa party's visit to Crow Agency and indeed Sitting Bull wasn't able to pay another visit to the Crows.

Don't think so, the image comes from the Petzoldt collection at the McCracken Research Library, it was probably taken by Reverend Petzoldt himself.

Dear forum neighbors: I am seeking information about the Northern Cheyenne <Little Big Man>, as distinguished from the Lakota <Little Big Man> (1840?-1887). Rootsweb's Tiyospaye index shows the Cheyenne man with a speculative life span of 1850?- . . . Does anyone have a photograph or any other information (including his Cheyenne name)?
