I've a unpublished photo album of 7th Cav. soldiers that's in my care, circa 1880-90's. Several men are ID'ed--can post images accordingly, as interested in anyone's input.

Doug...
D Troop, 7th Cav. was at Wounded Knee on 29 Dec, the day of the battle. I cannot confirm definitively that Sgt. Isaac Stevens was there, as the enlisted troopers are not listed by name unless wounded or killed. D Troop was commanded by Capt. Edward S. Godfrey, a survivor of Little Big Horn where he commanded K Company in Capt. Benteen's battalion. D Troop arrived at Wounded Knee the night prior to the battle with Col. Forsythe to reinforce Maj. Whitside's battalion and assist in disarming Big Foot's band. Forsythe placed D Troop mounted on the south side of the ravine. Godfrey later wrote of his unit's action that day:
"As soon as the Indians crossed the ravine, perhaps two hundred yards distant, and attempted to escape on the Agency road, I gave the command, 'Commence firing!'.... They [the troopers] fired rapidly but it seemed to me only a few seconds till there was not a living thing before us; warriors, squaws, children, ponies and dogs--for they were all mixed together--went down before that unaimed fire, and I don't think anything got nearer than a hundred yards. I believe over thirty bodies were found on our front."
I have a digital copy of the Regiment's returns for Dec 1890 and Jan 1891. The officers listed with D Troop are Capt. Godfrey, 1st Lt. William W. Robinson, Jr. (Serving as Whitside's adutant), and 2nd Lt. Selah R. H. Thompkins.
There were 54 enlisted men present for duty, 1 on extra duty, and 1 sick. 5 men were absent sick and 2 were in confinement. Of the enlisted troopers in D Troop there was 1 First Sergeant, 5 Sergeants, 4 Corporals, 2 Trumpeters, 2 Farriers, 1 Saddler, 1 Wagoner, and 47 privates. 3 of the privates were new recruits just assigned two weeks earlier. One D Trooper was killed in action, Pvt. Frank E. Reinecky, and two were wounded in action, Wagoner George York and Pvt. William Kern. The 7th Cavalry was involved in a train wreck on there return from Pine Ridge, SD to Fort Riley, KS, and the D Troop commander, Capt. Godfrey, was injured.
