Hi folks. Let me introduce myself, lizs. I enjoying traveling the Plains and near West. I have more than a few photos around. ;D So please bear with me as I start posting them.
This will lead you to a Webshots photo album from a trip in 2004. First stop, overnight camping at the Sage Creek primitive campground on the western edge of the northern (main) unit of Badlands National Park.
Then I was off to the lovely, quaint (??) village of Scenic, SD and went west of there to see Indian Creek. I believe the Sierra Club would like to see this put into an official"wilderness" designation and land use. Me? I found cowboys rounding up horses.
Going onto the Pine Ridge Reservation, I stopped at the Wounded Knee Cemetery and massacre site. This was my second trip there. The first time, I saw two girls running down a hill, playing. My mind saw children running from the past. Also, on the first trip, I think in 2000, a friend and I stopped at the AIM-sponsored cultural center/museum that was right by the cemetery. It was interesting. (Is that still there/open?)
Then it was on through the town of Pine Ridge (interesting to see how it feels to be a minority and probably something everyone should do at least once in his/her life) and west toward the OTHER Slim Buttes area and down to Chadron, Crawford and Fort Robinson in Nebraska. I did an overnight solo backpack into the Soldier Creek Wilderness, which from what I'm reading appears to be around where Crazy Horse came through with his people enroute to the fort??
I was going to geocache up in there and had contacted someone who'd done it to get an idea of what to expect - the area had burned off some years ago. I got to see the foundation of officer's club quarters, an old fireplace (not sure what it was from) and windmills. Lovely area - but a little hot at over 100 degrees and I got a bit heat stressed and low on water. But I made it out alive (lost my sleeping bag, but it later returned and that's another story)
I'm too lazy to post these photos here so you'll need to click on the thumbnail. Hope you enjoy!
