You is a BAAAAAAD man!!! Whilre I was looking for a book this morning, early - about 0700 PDT, I thought "why do I not inventory these piles of junk, so I at least don't have to remember what I have" and maybe will remember where things are - and here you are a few hours later posting your personal inventory. I don't know how you find time to booze it up and abuse your wife.

I decided to do likewise, the inventory that is, and the listing follows, in the order in which the books were piled [5 piles] or shelved [5 shelves], or boxed [two boxes] - otherwise it is sheer coincidence if books find their way into any particular order. Since I don't know how to post lists to the web, and since I wrote out the lists as I went along, I am going to post this in dribs and drabs, so as not to develop lopsided muscles or writer's cramp. Great inventory - are any of those borrowed from The Conz?

Gordie, you might try downloading and using Libra, a freeware home library application. That is what I found and used. With it, you can enter the IBSN number and it will return the data from Amazon about the book and a cover graphic. There is one major bug/pain in the bun issue. Randomly, it blows up on a particular ISBN number or book or author and then you have to restart and manually add the data. Also, you can't print out text reports yet, you have to export the file to Excel and then print.

Another option which looks good but which I didn't find until after getting the bulk inventoried was Prager Software which is $49. That looks to be a more industrial-strength inventory program as it is used mainly by bookstores, etc. It does have an ISBN look-up function to add books. I had saved my Libra inventory as an exported Excel file and then converted it to a tab-delimited file for Import into Prager. That didn't work and I didn't have time to play with it but will goof around with it some today (anything to avoid having to figure out how to get 10 pounds of Colorado logic into a five pound bag, which is essentially what has to be done to get my Indian Wars books into one bookcase and off the floor.

Personally, Libra so far answers my needs. There are a couple of feature enhancements which would be nice that I am going to contact them about but for the price, it is adequate.

No, just based upon the impulses of posters through the years, I augmented my already slim and prosaic collection of LBH materials with suggested reading from the utterly worthless works others apparently use relentlessly.

But a strong case could be made they reflect a West Point syllabus for the three year intensive study they grant the LBH, yes. But, I can only surmise from the evidence here, of course.

I don't really expect to be adding more than a couple of published items - maybe Donahue's Maps book and Hutchins' Army and Navy Journal extracts. I have notes, typed and handwritten [that's a joke] filling half another box, and maps, published and otherwise, on the wall and in the notes box. Wat I need is a software application which will sort through everything, find what I need to work on a particular chapter, and then create the chapter for me by selecting the appropriate evidence. I know that there are programs that will convert speech to text, but they don't do the thinking part of the process.

But thanks anyway, and let me know if you want any of those asterisked books.

Gordie, another neat thing about that program, Libra, is that if you have a focusable webcam for your PC, you can use it as a barcode scanner. I just got through doing my CD collection and finished in about four hours of actual scanning with another hour manually entering ones which did not have a barcode or the barcode would not scan for one reason or another. Now to organize the damned things.

One thing about using the webcam as a scanner-sometimes it is notionable but if you have good light, it works well. Also, you can go to Ebay and purchase something called a Cuecat which is a barcode scanner which was distributed by some company during the dotcom era. The original software has been hacked and it can now be freely used as a generic barcode scanner. The price I saw Wednesday was $7.79 + S&H (approx. $6.00)

Now to start on the rest of the books, non-Western non-fiction first (only three bookcases of those.)

I appreciate your suggestion, honest I do. My CDs are already downloaded/uploaded and otherwise loaded onto my hard drive - in three different places [the computer did it] "My Music on MediaCenter," "My Music on Cyberlink Cinema Thingee," "The Library on Windows Music Player." They may also be on Nero, and another location - I'm afraid to look. This includes my dozen or so downloaded/uploaded/transverse loaded "homemade" CDs.

All of the Cd titles loaded in when I copied them to disc, except for a couple which showed up as "Unknown Album" on one of the noted locations. Most of the track titles also appeared, as if by magic, including all of the homemade stuff, which was weird.

I don't have many CDs [less than 200], so it only took a couple of hours to download/upload the whole shebang. It took longer to take the Cds out and put them back than to copy them. Now I can look then up in various places, from where I can also play them, and create new playlists to create special CDs for friends and enemies.

I downloaded all the songs to my Creative Zen media dealie, which took, as I recall, about ten seconds. I was just about to tell the thing to start, when it advised me that it was finished, I thought "Oh, yeah. Right. What'd ya do? Copy one song?" It said that there were 4237 [or 4327] songs now on my "Music Library." That's MY kind of machine!!!

Tomorrow, I will put my new Audio Technica USB turntable to use in copying my vinyl to my hard drive. This will take some time, since you have to actually play the record, and push the "record" button [and remember to unpush it when finished side one and side two]. I am virtually certain to screw this up from time to time, and wind up with long gaps of hiss and hum masquerading as music. Come to think of it, it might be reminiscent of some of my stuff - Snap, Crackle, Pop, Hiss, Whistle and Hum: Gordie Strikes again.

First up: Little Bobbie Seger and the Detroit Hubcaps..........................
