Maybe its just me, but can anyone think of a more unlikely Claus Philipp Maria Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg than Tom Cruise? I thought he was an improbable fighter jock and racing driver but this takes the cake.

I haven't seen the movie, but strictly on appearance, I'd have to agree. I've always envisaged someone like Jeremy Irons or John Malkovich, although they might be a bit too old now. Cruise is a decent actor of limited range, I think, but can't seem to allow himself to be filmed as other than a "pretty boy." I watched a couple of scenes of that "Irish coming to America" movie he did a few years back, and found him totally unbelievable therein.
When John Wayne played Rooster Cogburn, you could believe that he was missing an eye. Cruise - no way. Too clean, too pretty, too too..........................

I will be passing on Valkyrie. Doubt I even watch it on HBO next year. Tom Cruise in makeup with an eye patch? The pretty boy as Von Stauffenberg, about the phoniest thing I've ever seen. I prefer the history international channel version. (Used to be on the history channel which should now be called the modern channel.)

Risky Business meets Hitler.
I guess I just don't care that much for T. Cruise. Like Gordie said, he's passable in his roles, but nothing special. Certainly not to the level of the commotion raised around him.
He does have fair taste in women though. I'll give him that.

PS I do hope your lady and you enjoy it Larry.

Or my third cousin, twice removed, Max Schell, who may not still be with us. He would have made a great Von Anything.........................

I'll go one step farther: No one should need to actually see any particular Tom Cruise to know what they're going to get. (Rather like dc's idea that he really doesn't need to read a new Custer book to know what's in it) Cruise has reached that comfortable plateau which some actors reach, he just plays himself each time.
The investors in films today go looking for a bankable vanilla, as the safest bets to put their money on. So, we get many actors that won't venture out from the formula of persona and performance that delivers regular (and sometimes big) pay days to them. In past times they were called character actors, but didn't get the lead roles.

Another problem is that I'd have to learn the history of psychiatry before I could watch another Cruise movie. Guess I'm not qualifed by his standards to watch his movies.
I'll wait for Larry to post his review of the movie or his date or both! Maybe it will be a lucky movie.
When is the next western coming out? I'd even settle for a Bruce Willis action pic.
