Watched a documentary last night to commemorate. Seeing Nevada trying to limp down the channel for the open sea in the midst of that conflagation, only to come under attack from the second wave....
God bless them all.

My Dad enlisted for Hawaii in the Army Air Corp. in 1940 and was sent to Jefferson Barracks Mo (yep, same place that the 7th pulled their recruits from) and did his basic training there. He OJT'd as an aircraft mechanic in the 46th pursuit Group, Wheeler Field, Oahu, Hawaii. By December of 41 he was a Corporal and crew chief on a Curtiss P-36 #86. On Sunday December 7th, he was leaving the Mess Hall with 2 extra pints of milk (He was a child of the depression and due to weekend passes there was always extras on Sunday) and headed back to the Tent area (Yes, they lived in tents due to the buildup of forces and barracks building had not caught up). I guess this was around 7:35A.M. when they came under attack (Wheeler and Scholfield Barracks were the closest on the Jappanese approach). He ran to his asigned aircraft and pulled it out of line (they were all lined up that morning) and with help, fueled and armed the airplane. A 2nd Lt Phillup Rasmussen ended up flying Dad's airplane and was credited with a kill over Kaneahoe Bay. The only example of this type aircraft in the US, is in the Air Force museum at Wright Patterson, Dayton, Ohio and is displayed as #86. Dad would later volunteer for Pilot school but get "washed out" before he got back to the States(they had their quota) and was sent to B-17 Gunnery/flight engineer school, Kingman Az, then 331 Sq, 94th Bomb Group 8th Air Force, Burry St Edmmonds, England for 28 missions. Still with us but doing poorly. He's always been my Hero!
