Welcome to the club, clansman [you have to be careful of that moniker this side of the wide water, although they usually spell it with a "k"]. You'd have to go out of your way not to make friends here - this is a warm and welcoming site, with several members from across the pond and in the Land of Oz. We're like a little United Nations here, but more effective.
Where in Scotland are you located? I ask in the spirit of collegiality [is that a word?], and because I am again visiting the land of some of my forebears next year [see Big Gordie's Big Jaunt, page 5], and might want to cadge a beer.

What a coincidence...we just bid farewell to many a Scotsman who attended our Ryder Cup here in Louisville. Most of them had enjoyed our bourbon a bit too much...hope they all got home safely!
Welcome.

Thanks for the welcome. Gordie. Definitely with a "C"!! I am in Blair Atholl in the Perthshire highlands. Are you near Vancouver? I have a brother and nephew in Maple Ridge. conz. The trouble with these Scotsmen is that they were led by an Englishman!!!

Failte, clansman. I have passed Blair Atholl many times on the way to Inverness, stopped off once to do the castle. Beautiful countryside.

clansman:
I'm in New Westminster, which is in between Vancouver and Maple Ridge, about 15 miles from the latter. I don't drive, otherwise I'd hop over, give your family your regards, and cadge a beer off them.
The tour I will be taking passes by Blair Atholl on its way to Inverness [through] to Strathpeffer, where we spend two nights. This will be my first trip to the highlands, and the itinerary is one reason I chose this particular tour. My 1992 trip covered only Glasgow and Edinburgh [and Gretna Green and Stirling].
Tatanka:
Are you a resident in Inverness, or does your business take you there regularly?
Regards to you both,
Gordie

clansman. Afraid not. I only know a few words, not enough to carry on a conversation. gordie. I live near Stirling, about 30 miles from Glasgow. I love the highlands and spend a lot of holidays there. We spent a good holiday in BC a couple of years ago. My legs still shake when I think of Kitsilano! Stanley Park is beautiful tho.

gordie. How are you travelling when you come to Scotland? Bus, train or car? My brother lived in New Westminster for a time. Can't remember his address. He worked in Burrards Shipyard until he retired.
tatanka. I'm coming down your way in a couple of weeks. My wife loves the Thistles Shopping Centre. Maybe we could meet up then.

clansman:
I'm traveling on a 25 day bus tour [Cosmos], after a week or ten days in London. Five nights are in Scotland, one in Northern Ireland, seven in the Republic, two in Wales, and at least fifteen in England..
Last time, in 1992, we did mostly the continent, with five days in London and a quick six day tour of parts of England and Scotland, with a very brief visit to Wales.
tatanka:
Did you manage to get outside the Lower Mainland? There are places in BC that still blow MY mind!! Stanley Park is a little less beautiful nowadays - we lost over 3,000 mature trees in a horrendous wind storm a couple of years ago. The Seawall Walk was closed for over a year. The blowdowns have all been cleared out and replaced by new plantings, but it is not the same as losing so many hundreds-of-years-old firs and pines.

gordie. Sorry to hear about the damage in Stanley Park. Did the totem poles escape it? Did Chinatown, Coquitlam. Went up Grouse Mountain. Views were fantastic. We'll do more if we hopefully go back.

tatanka:
If you do ever plan a return visit, please let me know and I'll recommend some places to see. A couple of the totem poles were blown over, but not, thankfully damaged, and all have been restored to their rightful positions.

gordie. Don't know if your tour will allow a stop here. If you're coming up from Glasgow you'll be using the A9 which passes right past my house. It's a 2 storey converted farmhouse just a few yards from the motorway, with a great view of the village and mountains. We'll discuss it better nearer the time.
tatanka. Will do.
