Anybody with a few pennies to rub together and some empty bookshelf space might like to know that Swann Galleries have a sale coming up on Wednesday August 27th which will feature a whole swathe of stuff from Elizabeth Atwood Lawrence's research library.
None of this is from her collection of original letters, I hasten to say; it's all 20th-century stuff, and (I'm told) mostly 1950s magazines, articles, ephemera, etc. However, it could be a very nice acquisition for any Custeriana collector. These are the relevant lots:
Sale B60 Lot 23. Americana. 20th-century prints, posters, and trading cards relating to General Custer. Many framed. 1 shelf, over 50 items. Estimate $400-600
Sale B60 Lot 24. Americana. 20th-century posters relating to General Custer and the American West. 1 box, Approx. 30 items. Estimate $100-150
Sale B60 Lot 32. Americana. 20th-century magazines relating to General Custer and the American West. 2 boxes, over 100 items. Estimate $400-600
Sale B60 Lot 33. Americana. 20th-century magazines relating to General Custer and the American West. 2 boxes, over 100 items. Estimate $400-600
Sale B60 Lot 34. Americana. 20th-century paperbacks relating to General Custer and the American West. 2 boxes, over 100 items. Estimate $400-600
Swann say: "These comprise a portion of Ms. Lawrence's reference library, including hundreds of historical journals, pulp magazines and paperbacks with Custer references. Lot 23 includes 7 pieces of original artwork relating to Gen. Custer, including sketches and watercolors by Reedstrom, Hammack, Steffen, and Barron Brown, as well as trading cards, buttons, and other ephemera, such as cards from the Allen & Ginter, R185 strip card, Look & See, and Goudey Indian Gum series."
Here's the link to the gallery, if anyone's interested:
