I've gotten really interested in the communications and official records of the 1876 Campaign. After digging around by myself, I've got some questions I'm sure someone here can answer.
Other than Overfield which is very abridged, where can I find the official records? We find pieces of the written record offered in various books and diaries, but I'd really like to read more of them. If they're not published, are they archived in one place, like the National Archives, or found in various sites here and there?
I've also been looking for information about where the telegraph keys around the perimeter of the area were located. So far I know the closest key to the west was Fort Ellis. To the south I think the closest was Laramie or did Fort Fetterman have one? To the east, the closest was Fort Lincoln. Any others?
Where was Sheridan during the campaign? He was at Laramie to meet Crook when he came in, but where was he before that?

clw:
Most of the official records are indeed in the National Archives. Many of them appear in various published Senate Documents, which include the Annual Reports of the Secretary Of War and The Secretary Of The Interior, which are themselves compendiums of reports from, in the case of the military, Division commanders, which include reports of the Department commanders, which include the reports of subordinate commanders............The "and small fleas have smaller still, and so ad infinitum" theory.
For the Custer fights, the most easily-obtained fairly complete repository of reports is John Carroll's GENERAL CUSTER AND THE BATTLE OF THE LITTLE BIGHORN - THE FEDERAL VIEW. A goodly chunk of this volume will soon be winging its way to you [Terry's annual report]. If you would like the rest, just shout.

I knew there would be a book and that I wouldn't be able to afford it. Whatever you stick in that envelope will be greatly appreciated, as always.
